💰 How far does your money go?
Hong Kong has a reputation as an expensive city. For hotel bars and Western restaurants, that reputation holds. But the city also runs on cha chaan tengs: traditional local cafés where a bowl of wonton noodle soup costs around HK$45, roughly £4.50. Dim sum lunch for two at a local Cantonese restaurant rarely tops £18. A pint in London now costs more than a full meal at one of Hong Kong's neighbourhood restaurants. Eat where locals eat and the city is remarkably affordable.
☀️ The weather
November is one of Hong Kong's finest months: temperatures around 22–24°C, low humidity and minimal rain. December cools to 18–20°C but stays dry and clear, with sharp views over Victoria Harbour. January and February are the coolest months, typically 15–18°C with crisp, sunny days. Evenings can be cool enough for a light jacket, but it is far from cold. The whole window from November to February sits in Hong Kong's best season.

Dim sum at a traditional restaurant – The definitive Hong Kong eating experience. Find a Cantonese restaurant with trolley service and order by pointing. A lunch that costs under a tenner and lasts all morning.
Tian Tan Buddha, Lantau Island – Take the Ngong Ping cable car to the world's largest outdoor seated bronze Buddha, 26 metres tall on a forested hilltop. One of the most striking sights in Asia.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Hong Kong is one of Asia's busiest transit hubs. The region opens up quickly from here.
Macau – 1 hour by high-speed ferry. Portuguese colonial streets, Michelin-starred restaurants and an unlikely cultural mix that exists nowhere else in Asia.
Guangzhou, China – 47 minutes by high-speed train from West Kowloon. Ancient temples, sprawling markets and Cantonese food at its authentic source.
Shenzhen, China – 40 minutes by MTR. A city that went from fishing village to global tech hub in a single generation.
Taipei, Taiwan – 1 hour 40 minutes by air. Night markets, mountain hiking and one of the most food-obsessed cities on the planet.
Tokyo, Japan – 3 hours 30 minutes by air. A natural addition if you're going this far east, with connecting fares from Hong Kong that are often surprisingly cheap.
British Airways, non-stop, under £600. If Hong Kong has been on the list, this is the fare to book it on.
