You are connecting through Guangzhou on a China Southern flight. The layover is 10 hours. Most passengers settle in at the gate. What they do not know: the airline will put them in a hotel, feed them breakfast, and bring them back in time for boarding. At no extra cost.
What Is China Southern's Free Transit Hotel?
China Southern Airlines offers qualifying transit passengers one free night of hotel accommodation, breakfast, and a return transfer between the airport and the hotel. The main hub for this service is Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, with eight additional cities also offering the benefit.
Available cities: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Changsha, Wuhan, Dalian, Shenyang, Urumqi, and Zhengzhou.
Check before you book: China Southern updated its transit hotel policy in mid-2025 and removed eligibility for some routes. Confirm current eligibility on the China Southern website or with your booking agent before planning around this benefit.
Who qualifies for the free layover hotel?
Your ticket must be booked on China Southern flights (CZ code), including codeshare flights. Both connections must be on the same booking reference (PNR) with confirmed seats.
Layover duration:
- Domestic to international connection: between 6 and 30 hours
- International to international connection: between 6 and 144 hours
Hotel tier by cabin class
Grade A (Business class, intercontinental routes): 4-star+ or luxury properties, rooms of 35+ sqm
Grade B (Business class, other routes; Sky Pearl Gold/Silver members): 4-star+ high-end standard
Grade C (Economy class): 3-star+ comfortable standard
Do You Need a Visa to Use the China Southern Layover Hotel?
This is where China Southern has a significant advantage. China operates a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy covering 55 nationalities, including UK, most EU, US, Canadian, and Australian passport holders.
You do not need to apply for a visa in advance. Fill in the online arrival card before boarding at the National Immigration Administration site or via the "NIA 12367" app. On arrival, apply for the 240-hour visa-free permit at the immigration desk.
The 240-hour window is more than enough to use the free hotel and still have time to explore Guangzhou before your onward flight.
Why Most Passengers Miss It
China Southern is one of the largest airlines in the world by passenger numbers. Guangzhou Baiyun is one of Asia's busiest international hubs. Millions of passengers connect through it every year — very few know they can claim a free hotel on the spot.
The transit hotel is available at the transfer desk on arrival. No pre-booking is required for most cities. For Guangzhou and Shenyang, online booking is also available through the China Southern website.
How to Claim the China Southern Free Transit Hotel
- Book a China Southern (CZ code) itinerary with a Guangzhou layover of 6 to 30 hours (domestic-international) or 6 to 144 hours (international-international). Both segments must be on the same PNR with confirmed seats.
- Before departure, fill in the Chinese arrival card online at the NIA website or the "NIA 12367" app. This saves time at immigration.
- On arrival in Guangzhou, clear immigration under the 240-hour visa-free transit policy. Have your onward boarding pass or ticket ready to show.
- Go to the China Southern transfer service counter inside the terminal. Present your boarding pass and passport. For Guangzhou, you can also book online in advance via the China Southern website.
- A transfer bus will take you to the hotel. Allow at least 90 minutes for the return journey to clear security again before your next flight.
One practical note: if the hotel you are assigned is already full, China Southern may offer a lower-tier property. Rooms are not guaranteed — arriving early at the desk improves your chances.
A 10-hour stopover in Guangzhou does not have to mean ten hours in a terminal. Free hotel, free breakfast, and a city of 18 million people outside the door. Check eligibility for your route before you book, and factor this in.
