The Bund — Shanghai's riverfront mile. Grand 1920s banking houses behind you, Pudong's skyline across the water. Go at dusk when both sides light up.
Yu Garden — A Ming-dynasty classical garden of koi ponds, dragon walls and rockeries in the Old Town. Queue for soup dumplings at Nanxiang next door.
The French Concession — Plane-tree avenues, 1920s villas, tiny coffee bars and speakeasies. The best few hours you will spend doing nothing in particular.
Shanghai Tower — The world's second-tallest building. The 118th-floor deck puts the whole sprawl under your feet, and the lifts climb at 20 metres per second.

Shanghai sits at the centre of the world's biggest bullet-train network. Day trips are easy.
Suzhou — 25 minutes by high-speed train. Canal lanes and UNESCO-listed classical gardens.
Hangzhou — Under an hour by train. West Lake, misty tea hills and lakeside temples.
Zhujiajiao — An hour by metro and bus. A Ming and Qing water town of stone arch bridges and slow canal boats.
Huangshan — 2.5 hours by train. The granite peaks and cloud seas that inspired centuries of Chinese painting.
Beijing — 4.5 hours by bullet train. The Great Wall, the Forbidden City and Peking duck, doable as an overnight.
