💰 How far does your money go?
In Zanzibar, a plate of fresh octopus curry costs around €4. A local beer at a beach bar is €2 — roughly a third of what you would pay at a terrace in Amsterdam. Cocktails at a resort bar run to about €9. For €70–80 a day you eat well, drink well and barely notice the exchange rate.
☀️ The weather
June is the tail end of Zanzibar's wet season. Expect warm temperatures of 26–28°C, occasional short downpours, and plenty of sunshine between them. The rains typically ease through the month and by late June the skies are mostly clear. The Indian Ocean water temperature sits around 27°C.
🏨 Where to stay
From Stone Town to the north coast, there is a strong range across all budgets.

Boutique hotel in Nungwi with an infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean. Striking design, attentive service, and access to one of Zanzibar's best beaches.

All-villa resort on Kendwa beach with private plunge pools and a spa. An open-air restaurant that makes you forget what continent you are on.
🎯 What to do
Zanzibar mixes Arab, Persian, Indian and Swahili cultures. There is more here than most people expect.
Stone Town walking tour — UNESCO-listed labyrinth of carved doors, spice markets, mosques and former slave trade sites. Half a day minimum; most people find they need more.
Spice plantation tour — Zanzibar earned its "Spice Island" name from cloves, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. A tour takes you through working plantations with tastings. One of the most sensory experiences on the island.
Jozani Forest — Home to the red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on earth. A short drive from Stone Town through coastal forest. An unusually accessible wildlife encounter with no safari costs.
Prison Island and Nakupenda Sandbank — Boat trip to a colonial-era island with free-roaming giant tortoises, then to a sandbank that appears at low tide. Fresh seafood, snorkelling and open water. The classic full-day Zanzibar experience.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Zanzibar sits in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa. It connects easily to some of the most varied terrain on the continent.
Pemba Island — The less-visited island in the Zanzibar archipelago, 80km north. Quieter beaches and some of the best dive sites in East Africa. Reachable by small plane or ferry.
Mnemba Island — A private sandbank off the northeast coast, accessible by boat for snorkelling and dolphin encounters. One of the clearest stretches of water in the region.
Dar es Salaam — 35 minutes by ferry to the Tanzanian mainland. The starting point for safaris to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Kilimanjaro for those who want to extend the trip.
Mafia Island — Further south in the Indian Ocean. Marine life is exceptional year-round, and the island remains small, remote and largely untouched.
Flights depart in six days. Non-stop. €480 return.
