💰 How far does your money go?
The Amalfi Coast has a reputation for emptying wallets. Stay east of Positano and it does not hold up. An espresso standing at the bar is €1.30, less than half what a London coffee shop charges for a flat white. A cuoppo, a paper cone of fried anchovies and calamari, costs about €12 on the Amalfi seafront. A plate of pasta at a trattoria in Cetara or Maiori runs €15, cheaper than the same dish at a London chain. A glass of local Falanghina is €8.

October on the Amalfi Coast is shoulder season and it shows. Daytime highs sit around 22°C, dropping to 13°C after dark. Expect roughly six hours of sun a day and the odd afternoon shower as the wetter season sets in. The sea holds around 20°C, cool but swimmable if you are quick. The summer crowds have gone and the ferries still run to the end of the month.

Salerno is a working city with a medieval core, not a resort. That is the point.
Salerno historic centre: The Duomo with its bronze doors and the tomb of Saint Matthew, tangled lanes, and the palm-lined Lungomare for the evening passeggiata.
Ferry up the coast: Amalfi in 35 minutes, Positano in about 70, straight from Salerno's port. The views from the water beat the coast road.
Vietri sul Mare: Fourteen minutes by train. The ceramics town, where hand-painted tiles cover every shopfront, staircase and church dome.
Cetara: A small anchovy-fishing port with no crowds. Order spaghetti alla colatura, the local fermented anchovy sauce, at a table by the harbour.
