💰 How Far Does Your Money Go?
A café con leche and medialunas costs around €3.50, and a full parrilla asado for two, steak, chorizo, a bottle of Malbec, comes to about €28. That is less than a menú del día for two back in Madrid. A day out covering a museum, lunch and a few coffees rarely tops €40.
☀️ The Weather
Buenos Aires runs on opposite seasons to Europe. Fly in September or October and you land in spring, mild days around 20-23°C. Push into December, January or February and it is full Argentine summer, highs near 29-32°C and the humid nights the city is known for. March to May brings a softer autumn, 18-23°C with fewer crowds. Whichever window you pick, pack for warmth.
🏨 Where to Stay
San Telmo, Palermo or the centre, take your pick.
Lopez Hostel & Suites: 9.2/10 · From €20/night Private and dorm rooms in San Telmo, built for travellers watching the pesos.
Huinid Obelisco Hotel: 9.0/10 · From €95/night Four-star comfort right off the Obelisco, walking distance to the theatre district.
SLS Buenos Aires Puerto Madero: 9.0/10 · From €235/night A five-star glass tower in Puerto Madero, rooftop pool and skyline views included.
🎯 What to Do
Tango, steak and a city that barely sleeps.
Sunday feria in San Telmo: Ten blocks of antiques, live tango and street food along Defensa, best on a Sunday morning. El Ateneo Grand Splendid: A converted theatre turned bookshop, free to wander and one of the most photographed interiors in the city. Steak dinner in Palermo: A parrilla asado with a glass of Malbec, the meal the whole city is built around. Tango show in San Telmo or Recoleta: Live tango with dinner, book ahead for a table close to the floor.
🗺️ Where to Go From Here
Buenos Aires is a gateway to the rest of the continent, not just a city break.
Iguazu Falls: A two-hour flight north, waterfalls on a scale photos never quite capture. Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay: A one-hour ferry across the Río de la Plata, cobbled streets and a slower pace. Mendoza: A two-hour flight west into wine country, better as a multi-day add-on than a day trip.
Ten months of dates and a non-stop flight for under €600. Argentina does not come around this cheap often.
