💰 How far does your money go?
Thailand is where a normal budget stretches. A plate of pad thai from a street cart is about 60 THB, roughly €1.50. A large Chang from a shop runs 65 THB, about €1.70, less than a caña on most Madrid terraces. Even a cocktail on a rooftop with a skyline view starts around 350 THB, near €9, where a Madrid rooftop is closer to €14. Three street meals a day come to about €7.

September and October are the tail of the monsoon. Highs hold at 32°C, nights stay around 25°C, and the humidity is constant. September is the wettest month of the year in Bangkok, with rain on roughly 20 days, usually a heavy burst in the afternoon rather than all-day grey. October dries out gradually. Carry a light poncho and plan indoor gaps around 3pm.

Yaowarat after dark — Chinatown's street kitchens fire up around 6pm for charcoal seafood, oyster omelettes and fruit stalls.

Bangkok is the hub, not the whole trip.
Ayutthaya — the ruined former capital, 80km north, 1 to 2 hours by train for about €1.
Chiang Mai — the walled old city and the temple hills of the north, a 75-minute flight or an overnight sleeper train.
Ko Samet — the nearest proper beach, about 3 hours from the eastern bus terminal by coach and ferry.
Phuket or Krabi — the Andaman coast and the limestone islands, a 90-minute flight from around €30.
