Bangkok runs on street food and small change. A plate of pad kra pao from a stall is about €1.40, less than a caña costs on a Madrid terrace. A cold Chang from 7-Eleven is €1.60, a bowl of boat noodles just over €1. A full Thai dinner with a beer at a local spot lands around €8, cheaper than one menú del día back home.

Ringside Muay Thai at Rajadamnern — The oldest stadium in the country, with the crowd betting in real time and the band driving each round.

Bangkok is the hub for the whole country, not just a stopover.
Ayutthaya — One hour north by train. The ruined former capital, best seen by bike between the crumbling stupas.
Kanchanaburi — Two to three hours west by train or bus. The bridge on the River Kwai, wartime history and the Erawan waterfalls.
Ko Samet — Three hours away by bus and ferry. The nearest proper beach island, quiet midweek.
Chiang Mai — 75 minutes by domestic flight. Old-city temples, night markets and the cooler northern hills.
Hua Hin — Three hours south by train. A low-key royal beach town with big night markets and none of the party crowd.
