💰 How far does your money go?

Buenos Aires is where the euro stretches. A full parrilla dinner, a good cut of steak, sides and a half bottle of Malbec, runs about €27 a head. Café con leche with three medialunas is around €3. A glass of wine in a Palermo bar is €2.50. You can eat and drink better than you do at home for the price of a menú del día in Madrid.

☀️ The weather

The travel window covers three seasons, so the month you pick matters. February is high summer: highs near 29°C, humid, sticky nights around 20°C. March and April are the sweet spot, dry days of 24 to 27°C and cool evenings. May cools to 20°C by day and about 11°C at night. June and July are winter, 15 to 17°C in the afternoon, down to 8°C after dark, grey mornings but rarely wet. Pack for the month you book.

🏨 Where to stay

Palermo for the bars and restaurants, Recoleta for the grand streets and museums, San Telmo for tango and antiques.

Up Recoleta Hotel — 8.6/10 · From €70/night Plain, spotless rooms with a small rooftop pool, a short walk from the cemetery and Avenida Alvear.

Own Palermo Soho — 8.8/10 · From €95/night Design hotel in the middle of Palermo Soho, steps from the best restaurants and cocktail bars in the city.

Alvear Palace Hotel — 9.6/10 · From €480/night The grande dame of Recoleta. Belle Époque rooms, a spa and afternoon tea in the marble lobby.

🎯 What to do

A city that eats late and dances later.

Recoleta Cemetery: A maze of marble mausoleums where Evita is buried. Free, open daily, an hour is enough.

San Telmo Sunday feria: Antiques, street food and live tango down Calle Defensa every Sunday from 10am. Stay for the milonga where locals dance after dark.

A late parrilla in Palermo: Book a table for 10pm, order the bife de chorizo and a bottle of Malbec, and settle in. This is the main event.

La Boca and Caminito: The painted tin houses and street tango are a tourist set piece, but the walk plus a match at La Bombonera makes a full afternoon. Stick to the main streets.

🗺️ Where to go from here

Buenos Aires is also the jumping-off point for half the continent.

Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay: A cobbled Portuguese smuggling town with river beaches. One hour by fast ferry across the Río de la Plata.

Tigre and the Delta: A maze of wooded islands and river taxis north of the city. One hour by train from Retiro.

Iguazú Falls: 275 waterfalls on the Brazilian border, one of the great sights of South America. One hour fifty by domestic flight.

Mendoza: Malbec country in the foothills of the Andes, all vineyards and long lunches. One hour forty by flight west.

Bariloche: Alpine lakes, chocolate shops and Patagonian trails. Two hours twenty by flight south.

Non-stop to Buenos Aires from Madrid for €671 does not hang around. Pick your fortnight and book it.
