White sand, flat calm water, and a sun that actually turns up in December.
Sal sits off the coast of West Africa, four hours of desert island and beach. From 27 October, EasyJet flies there non-stop from Amsterdam. It is the airline's longest route ever, and the only direct link between the Netherlands and Cape Verde. Return fares start at €162.

💰 How far does your money go
Sal runs on the escudo, and it is cheap once you land. A cold Strela beer on the beach is about €4. A cappuccino is €1.70. Dinner of fresh-caught tuna with a glass of local wine comes to around €18. Budget travellers get through the day on €35 all in.
☀️ The weather
Sal barely has seasons. In November the days sit at 28°C with almost no rain, and the Atlantic is 26°C, warm enough to stay in for hours. December cools a little to 26°C by day and 21°C at night, with the sea around 24°C. The wind picks up from November, which is exactly why the kitesurfers show up.
🏨 Where to stay
Almost everything is in Santa Maria, a small grid of streets that runs straight onto the beach.

🎯 What to do
Sal is flat, dry and built for the water.
Kite Beach — One of the best kitesurf spots on the planet. Flat shallow water, wind almost every afternoon, lessons for total beginners.
Pedra de Lume salt crater — Float in a bright turquoise salt lake inside an old volcano. You physically cannot sink.
Buracona and the Blue Eye — A natural rock pool on the wild north coast that glows electric blue when the midday sun drops into it.
Shark Bay at Baía das Fontes — Wade in knee-deep and walk among harmless baby lemon sharks a few metres from the sand.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Sal is the way into Cape Verde, not the whole of it. The other islands are a short flight away.
Boa Vista — Dunes, empty beaches and nesting turtles. A 20-minute hop by domestic flight. Search flights
São Vicente — Mindelo is the music capital, all live morna bars and a proper carnival. Under an hour by air. Search flights
Santo Antão — The hiking island: deep ravines, terraced valleys, cloud forest. Fly to São Vicente, then a one-hour ferry.
Santiago — The largest island and the capital, Praia, with the country's best market up the road at Assomada. A 45-minute flight. Search flights
