💰 How far does your money go
A large beer on an Amsterdam terrace costs €7 these days. On Sal, a half-litre of local draught is around €2.70. A cappuccino is about €1.70. Grilled fresh fish at a beach restaurant in Santa Maria runs €12 to €18, and a plate of the day away from the seafront can be as little as €5.

Sal is dry, sunny and warm all winter. November is the hottest of these months, with highs of 28°C, almost no rain and a 26°C sea. December and January settle at 25°C to 26°C by day and around 20°C at night. February and March are the mildest, still 25°C in the afternoon, with the Atlantic at 22°C. The trade winds blow steadily from November, which is exactly why kitesurfers fly in from all over Europe.

Sal is flat, dry and made for the water.
Kite Beach: Flat shallow water and wind almost every afternoon. Lessons start from total beginner.
Pedra de Lume salt crater: Float in a salt lake inside an old volcanic crater. Sinking is not an option.
Buracona and the Blue Eye: A rock pool on the wild north coast that glows electric blue when the midday sun hits it.
Shark Bay: Wade in knee-deep and watch young lemon sharks circle a few metres from the sand.
