💰 How far does your money go
The Dominican peso does the heavy lifting here. A cold Presidente beer at a beach shack is about €1.80, less than a caña on a Madrid terrace. A plate of la bandera, rice, beans and stewed meat, runs to €5 in a local comedor, roughly half a menú del día back home. A flat white in a Zona Colonial café is €2.30. A 5km taxi across town costs around €2.30 on the app.

Santo Domingo rewards walking more than a checklist.
The Zona Colonial on foot — Eleven blocks of cobbled streets, the first cathedral in the Americas, and the Alcázar de Colón, the palace Columbus's son built in 1514. Start at Parque Colón and drift.
Calle El Conde at dusk — The pedestrian spine of the old town fills with dominoes, street music and rum. Take a table on the Conde de Peñalba terrace and watch it unfold.
Los Tres Ojos — Three open-air limestone caves with turquoise pools, ten minutes from the centre in a park on the eastern edge of the city.
A merengue and bachata night — Both were born on this island. Bars around the Zona Colonial have live bands most nights, and nobody minds if you cannot dance.

Santo Domingo is the way into the country, not the whole trip.
Bayahíbe and Isla Saona — White sand and shallow turquoise water on the south-east coast. Two hours by bus, then a boat.
Las Terrenas — Beach town on the Samaná peninsula with a French-Caribbean streak. Three hours north by road.
Samaná bay — Humpback whales calve here between January and March. Buses and a fast ferry run from the capital.
Jarabacoa — Pine forests, waterfalls and white-water rafting in the mountains. Cooler air, two and a half hours inland.
Punta Cana — The resort strip and the postcard beaches, three hours east by road.
