El Salvador rarely makes the shortlist. Costa Rica gets the eco-tourism crowd, Mexico gets the Instagram reels, and El Salvador sits quietly in between with 300km of Pacific coast, a chain of volcanoes, colonial towns, and a capital city that's finally found its stride. Iberojet flies there non-stop from Madrid and Barcelona. Right now, it costs under €600 return.

💰 How far does your money go?
A full lunch at a local comedor in El Salvador costs around $4. That's less than a coffee at any bar in central Barcelona. Pupusas, the country's street-food staple, go for about $0.75 each. A beer at a local bar is under $2. You can eat and drink well all day for $20 without trying.
☀️ The weather
November through February is dry season in El Salvador. Temperatures on the Pacific coast sit at 28 to 31°C with blue skies and a consistent breeze. September and October are wetter, with short afternoon showers, but temperatures hold steady at around 27°C and prices drop across the board.

🎯 What to do
Small country, big variety.
Santa Ana Volcano - El Salvador's highest volcano. Hike to the crater rim and look down at a bright turquoise lake inside. One of the best summit views in Central America.
Joya de Cerén - A Mayan village buried by a volcanic eruption in 600 AD and remarkably preserved. UNESCO World Heritage Site and unlike anything else in the region.
El Tunco - Pacific surf beach 45 minutes from the capital. Consistent waves, fresh seafood, and a relaxed atmosphere.
Ruta de las Flores - A route through the Apaneca mountains connecting colonial villages, coffee farms, and food markets. Best done as a full day.
🗺️ Where to go from here
El Salvador sits in the middle of Central America. Several worthwhile extensions.
Suchitoto - The cultural capital of El Salvador, about 90 minutes north of San Salvador. A preserved colonial town on the shores of Suchitlán Lake, with some of the best food in the country.
Lake Coatepeque - A deep volcanic crater lake near Santa Ana. Swim in it, kayak across it, or eat grilled fish by the water.
Jiquilisco Bay - A protected biosphere on the Pacific coast. Mangroves, wildlife, sea turtle conservation, and kayaking through channels most tourists never reach.
Copán, Honduras - The most impressive Mayan ruins in the region, about 4 hours by road from San Salvador. Easy cross-border trip worth adding if you have the time.
Non-stop from Spain to Central America for under €600. These dates sell out faster than you'd think.
