💰 How far does your money go?
The flight is the expensive part. After that Jakarta barely touches your card. A plate of nasi goreng from a street cart is about €1.30. A full warung meal, rice, chicken, vegetables, sambal and a drink, runs €2 to €3. A large bottle of Bintang is around €2. One beer in an Amsterdam bar now averages €7. A flat, sprawling city best taken one neighbourhood at a time.
Kota Tua on foot: The old Dutch town around Fatahillah Square, ochre colonial buildings, candy-coloured rental bikes and four small museums ringing the plaza.
The National Museum: Reopened after the 2023 fire with a modern layout, the best single place to understand Indonesia beyond Java. Across the road from Monas.
Sunda Kelapa old harbour: The original port, where towering wooden Pinisi schooners still load timber by hand. A short ride north from Kota Tua.
Glodok and a rooftop: Wander Chinatown's lanes and temples for lunch, then a sunset drink at SKYE on the 56th floor for the full scale of the place.

Jakarta is the front door to Java and the islands, not the destination.
Yogyakarta: Borobudur and Prambanan temples, batik workshops and street food. One hour by plane or an overnight train.
Bandung: Cooler highland city with volcano craters and hot springs close by. Around three hours by train.
Bali: The obvious onward hop. Under two hours by plane, cheap and frequent.
Thousand Islands: A scatter of small islands in the bay north of the city, about an hour by boat for a day of snorkelling.
Labuan Bajo: The base for Komodo dragons and Flores diving. A domestic flight, usually with one stop.
