It's 11pm and the satay grills on Jalan Alor are still going. Skewers turning over charcoal, plastic stools spilling into the street, a plate of char kway teow landing in front of you for two quid. 💰 How Far Does Your Money Go?

Kuala Lumpur is one of the cheapest big cities in Asia to eat your way through. A hawker plate of nasi lemak or Hokkien mee costs around £2. A teh tarik, the frothy pulled milk tea, is 45p. A three-course dinner for two at a mid-range Bukit Bintang restaurant lands near £22. The one thing that stings is alcohol: heavy duties push a pint to about £4.20, so it's the beer, not the food, that breaks the budget. Even then, it's cheaper than a pint back home.

☀️ The Weather

Expect heat and sudden rain. November and December are the wettest months of the year in Kuala Lumpur, with afternoon highs around 31°C in November and 29°C in December, and nights that stay near 23°C. Humidity sits above 80%. Most days bring one heavy downpour that arrives fast, soaks everything for half an hour, then clears. Mornings are the driest window, so do your sightseeing early.

🏨 Where to Stay

Base yourself in Bukit Bintang or near KLCC and you can walk to the food, the malls and the monorail.

Hotel Capitol Kuala Lumpur — 8.0/10 · From £42/night Plain but spotless rooms right on Jalan Bukit Bintang, two minutes from the monorail and Jalan Alor. For travellers who only need the room for sleeping.

DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur — 8.9/10 · From £78/night Rooftop pool, a big breakfast and a walkway straight into KLCC Park and the Petronas Towers. For a comfortable mid-range base with a view.

JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur — 8.8/10 · From £155/night Directly opposite Pavilion mall, with large rooms and one of the best-connected addresses on the strip. For when the cheap flight pays for the room.

🎯 What to Do

A Hindu cave temple, the world's tallest twin towers and a night market, all on the same metro map.

Batu Caves — 272 rainbow-painted steps up to a limestone cave temple, guarded by a 43-metre gold statue and a lot of monkeys. Go before 9am to beat the tour buses.

Petronas Towers and KLCC Park — Ride up to the double-decker skybridge and observation deck, then watch the Lake Symphony fountain show from the park below after dark.

Jalan Alor at night — The city's loudest food street. Grilled stingray, satay, cut fruit and cold beer under strings of red lanterns.

Kampung Baru — A low-rise Malay village that never sold out to the developers, sitting in the shadow of the skyscrapers. Come Saturday night for the market and some of the best nasi lemak in the city.

🗺️ Where to Go From Here

Kuala Lumpur is the start of a peninsula, not the end of the line.

Melaka — UNESCO-listed trading town with Peranakan shophouses and a lantern-lit riverfront. Two hours south by express bus.

George Town, Penang — Malaysia's street-food capital, all colonial arcades and wall murals. Four hours by train or a one-hour flight.

Cameron Highlands — Tea plantations and strawberry farms at 1,500m, cool enough for a jumper. Three to four hours by road.

Langkawi — Duty-free island with beaches, a cable car and mangrove tours. A one-hour hop by plane.

Non-stop, no 5am connection in a Gulf airport, and a city where dinner costs less than the sandwich you'd buy at the gate. Grab the dates before BA notices.
