The best food in Japan, and you never change planes.

The griddle hisses. A paper tray of takoyaki, six molten spheres, gets pushed across the counter with a single toothpick. You are ten minutes off the metro in Dotonbori and dinner has cost you three euros. KLM flies Amsterdam to Osaka non-stop, and right now the return starts at €882.

💰 How far does your money go?

Osaka is Japan's kitchen, and it is cheap. A bowl of ramen or a set lunch runs about ¥950, close to €5.50. That is a quarter of what a sit-down dinner costs you in Amsterdam. A cold can of beer from a Lawson or a FamilyMart is ¥300, about €1.85, against the €6 you hand over on a terrace back home. Even a full night of eating your way down Dotonbori, takoyaki then okonomiyaki then kushikatsu, skewer after skewer, is hard to push past €25.

☀️ The weather

Your dates split across two very different seasons. Go in September and Osaka is still hot: 30 to 34°C in the first half of the month, easing to a pleasant 25 to 28°C by late September, with warm evenings built for outdoor food stalls. Go in February and it flips: highs around 10°C, nights close to 3°C, cold and bright, with very little rain. Winter is the quieter, cheaper time to see the city.

🏨 Where to stay

Namba puts you in the middle of the food and the neon. Umeda is calmer and better placed for day trips.

Hotel Gracery Osaka Namba, 8.6/10 · from €70/night Compact, clean rooms two minutes from Namba station and the Dotonbori canal.

Swissôtel Nankai Osaka, 8.9/10 · from €200/night Built on top of Namba station. You can reach Dotonbori without stepping outside.

Conrad Osaka, 9.3/10 · from €430/night Lobby on the 40th floor, glass walls over Osaka Bay and the river.

🎯 What to do

Osaka runs on food, neon and one very large castle.

Osaka Castle park: walk the outer moat round to the main keep, best in the low evening light.

Dotonbori and Kuromon Ichiba market: takoyaki and okonomiyaki by the canal, then seafood grilled in front of you at the market stalls.

Umeda Sky Building: an open-air rooftop ring 170m up, reached by an escalator that crosses open space between two towers.

Shinsekai: a scruffy postwar district under the Tsutenkaku tower, all cheap kushikatsu and standing bars.

🗺️ Where to go from here

Osaka is the base for the whole Kansai region. Most of it is a short train ride away.

Kyoto: 15 minutes by shinkansen, or 45 on the cheaper commuter line, for the temples and Gion.

Nara: 45 minutes on the Kintetsu line from Namba, for the bowing deer and the Great Buddha hall.

Kobe: 25 minutes by rapid train, for the harbour, the hills and the beef.

Himeji: 30 minutes by shinkansen, for Japan's finest surviving castle.

Koyasan: 90 minutes by train and cable car, a mountaintop temple town where you can sleep in a working monastery.

KLM only runs this route once a day, and the cheap fares on the good dates go first. Book the flight, then build the map around it.
