💰 How Far Does Your Money Go?
Puerto Rico runs on the US dollar, so nothing here is priced for euros. It still works out well. A plate of lechón from a roadside spot is about €9. A bottle of Medalla, the local beer, is roughly €3, and happy hour drops it lower than a beer on most Madrid terraces. A piña colada in Old San Juan, where the drink was mixed for the first time in 1954, runs €10 to €12. Mofongo at a neighbourhood restaurant costs around €13. A sit-down dinner with a couple of drinks lands near €30.

San Juan in January and February sits in the dry season, which is the reason people book it. Daytime highs run 27°C to 29°C. Nights hold near 21°C. The sea stays around 26°C. Trade winds keep the afternoons moving, and the odd short shower blows through and clears within the hour. This is well outside hurricane season.

Old San Juan on foot — Blue cobblestones, pastel townhouses and two Spanish forts, El Morro and San Cristóbal, on the headland.
El Yunque rainforest — The only tropical rainforest in the US national forest system. Waterfalls, natural rock slides and lookout towers, an hour east of the city.
Kayak a bioluminescent bay — After dark near Fajardo, the water lights up blue wherever your paddle breaks the surface.
A piña colada where it started — The Caribe Hilton and Barrachina both claim they mixed the first one. Try both and pick a side.

San Juan is the way in, not the whole trip.
Luquillo — Kiosk beach strip next to El Yunque, 45 minutes east. Fried food and calm water.
Vieques — Its bioluminescent bay is rated the brightest in the world. Ferry from Ceiba or a 25-minute flight.
Culebra — Flamenco Beach, regularly ranked among the best in the Caribbean. Ferry or a short hop from San Juan.
Ponce — The island's southern city, with colonial squares and a serious art museum. About 90 minutes by road.
Cabo Rojo — Pink salt flats and limestone cliffs at the south-west tip, roughly two and a half hours from the capital.
