It is grey over the canals and the wind has teeth. Nine hours later you could be barefoot on Playa Bávaro, a cold Presidente in hand, the sea as warm as bathwater. TUI flies it non-stop from Schiphol, and right now return fares start at €514.

💰 How far does your money go?
A cold Presidente in a beach bar runs about €4, roughly half what a pint sets you back in a Jordaan cafe. The plato del día, rice, beans, stewed meat and salad, lands around €7. Dinner for two at a decent mid-range restaurant is close to €47, the price of two mains and a drink back home.
☀️ The weather
September and October sit around 32°C by day and drop to a mild 24°C at night. This is hurricane season, so expect rain: usually short, heavy afternoon bursts that clear within the hour. Direct hits on Punta Cana are rare. The sea holds around 29°C, warm enough to swim at any hour.
🏨 Where to stay
All-inclusive is the norm here, so the nightly rate usually covers food and drink too.

🎯 What to do
Punta Cana is a beach base first, but the good stuff is a boat or a bus ride away.
Saona Island catamaran trip — Full day to a postcard island: a natural swimming pool full of starfish, white sand, Dominican lunch on the beach.
Santo Domingo colonial city — The oldest city in the Americas, cobbled streets and 16th-century stone, about three hours west.
Hoyo Azul cenote — A turquoise sinkhole at the foot of a cliff inside Scape Park, reached through jungle paths and orchid gardens.
Bávaro comedores and beach bars — Skip the resort buffet one night for a local comedor: grilled fish, tostones and a Presidente for a fraction of tourist prices.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Punta Cana is the gateway to the whole east of the island, not just its beaches.
Isla Saona — Protected island in the south, reached by catamaran or speedboat from Bayahibe. Santo Domingo — Capital and UNESCO old town, roughly a two to three hour drive. Samaná — Green peninsula in the northeast with the 50m Limón waterfall, about four hours by road. Isla Catalina — Small island off La Romana known for snorkelling and a shallow reef, a day trip by boat. Bayahibe — Laid-back fishing village and the launch point for most southern island tours, about an hour away.
Non-stop Caribbean fares at this price do not hang around. Lock the dates now, sort the beach bar later.
