💰 How far does your money go?
The Dominican peso stretches further than you expect. A full set lunch, rice, beans, meat, and a drink, costs around €7. A cold Presidente beer on the beach runs about €4. You can eat and drink your way through a full day for less than a menú del día back in Madrid.
☀️ The weather
September and October are the wettest months, with temperatures around 28–31°C and short tropical showers that pass quickly. November sees rain ease off considerably, with daily highs of around 30°C and lower humidity. December is the start of the dry season: 23–29°C, clear skies, and the best conditions of the four months. If you have flexibility, later is better.
🏨 Where to stay
All-inclusive resorts dominate Punta Cana, but there are options at every level.
Honky Tonk Punta Cana · 8.6/10 · From €55/night
A lively, casual spot close to Bavaro Beach. The right pick if you plan to spend most of your time outside the room.
Majestic Elegance Punta Cana · 8.6/10 · From €110/night (all-inclusive)
One of Bavaro's most consistent all-inclusive resorts. Multiple restaurants, direct beach access, and the kind of complex you won't feel the need to leave.
Sanctuary Cap Cana · 9.1/10 · From €280/night
A Marriott Luxury Collection resort on a quieter stretch near Cap Cana. Adults only, with serious restaurants and genuine five-star polish.
🎯 What to do
Punta Cana is a beach destination first, but there's plenty beyond the sunlounger.
Saona Island: A full-day catamaran excursion to one of the most photographed islands in the Caribbean. Shallow turquoise water, wild flamingos, and a natural starfish pool on the way.
Hoyo Azul at Scape Park: A natural cenote inside a limestone cliff, with water so blue it looks edited. Completely unexpected for a beach resort town.
Coco Bongo: Punta Cana's most famous nightclub. Live shows, acrobatics, and a crowd that keeps going until 5am. Worth it at least once.
Buggy tour through the palm groves: Dirt tracks, local villages, and a river swim. The side of the Dominican Republic the resort pool won't show you.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Punta Cana is a good base for exploring the rest of the island.
Santo Domingo: The oldest European city in the Americas. About 2 hours west by road, with UNESCO-listed colonial streets, a serious food scene, and a completely different energy to the resort strip.
Miches: A quiet beach town 1.5 hours north. Less developed, more local, and home to some of the island's most unspoiled stretches of sand.
Las Terrenas: A relaxed town on the Samaná peninsula, known for creole food, kitesurfing, and a French expat community. About 3 hours by road.
Los Haitises National Park: Mangrove forests, limestone islands, and caves with Taíno cave paintings. Best reached by boat from Samaná.
