💰 How far does your money go?
A Presidente beer at a beachside bar costs around $4.60, about £3.65, roughly the price of a pint back home. A plate of rice, beans and grilled chicken at a local comedor runs $5 to $10, about £4 to £8. A three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant comes to around $51, about £40.
☀️ The Weather
Punta Cana sits close to the equator, so September stays warm and steady: highs around 30°C, lows near 24°C. Expect short, heavy downpours most afternoons, then sun again within the hour. It's peak hurricane season, so pack a light rain jacket alongside the swimwear.
🏨 Where to Stay
Three options depending on how much resort you want.
Riu Naiboa — 8.1/10 · From €95/night All-inclusive on Bavaro Beach, straightforward and good value for a first trip.
Hyatt Vivid Punta Cana — 8.6/10 · From €160/night Set between the coastline and the Bavaro Lagoon, with a sleeker, more modern feel.
Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana — 9.2/10 · From €320/night Adults-only, beachfront, and about as far from an airport transfer queue as you can get.
🎯 What to Do
Beach days, cenotes and one very good island.
Saona Island — A speedboat ride out to a national park island, with a stop at a natural pool full of starfish. Hoyo Azul — A turquoise cenote 14 metres deep, tucked inside Scape Park. Bavaro Beach — The stretch everyone comes for: white sand, calm water, palm trees leaning over the shore. Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial — The oldest colonial city in the Americas, a couple of hours away by road.
🗺️ Where to Go From Here
Punta Cana works well as a base for the rest of the eastern Dominican Republic.
Saona Island — Isla Saona's beaches and mangroves, reachable by boat in under an hour. Santo Domingo — The capital's UNESCO-listed old town, around two and a half hours by road. Los Haitises National Park — Caves, mangroves and karst islets, roughly two hours away. Samana — Whale-watching season and El Limon waterfall, about three hours north.
