💰 How far does your money go?
Sal is not as cheap as mainland Africa, but eating like a local keeps costs down. A bottle of Strela, the local beer, costs around €1.50, a fraction of a spritz on the Navigli. A plate of grilled wahoo with rice and salad in Santa Maria is about €10, and a bowl of cachupa, the national stew, around €5. A shared aluguer minibus to Espargos costs €1.

Sal is dry and sunny almost all year. From December to March, days sit at 24 to 25°C with steady trade winds, perfect for kitesurfing, and the sea is around 22 to 23°C. April and May warm up to 26°C, and by June the wind drops, the days reach 27°C and the water is warmer.

🎯 What to do
Sal is made for slow days by the sea, with a few things worth getting up for.
Santa Maria pier at midday. Fishermen land tuna and wahoo straight onto the pier, cleaning the catch in front of the crowd.
Humpback whales. From March to May, humpback whales pass between Sal and Boa Vista, with boat trips leaving from Santa Maria.
Ponta Preta. A long, empty beach with one of the best wave-sailing spots in the world, best visited at sunset.
Palmeira and Monte Curral. A small fishing village on the west coast, then the viewpoint above Espargos for the whole island at once.
