💰 How far does your money go
Brazil got more expensive over the past two years, but for anyone earning in euros São Paulo is still a bargain. Consumer prices run roughly 40% below Brussels. The city's famous mortadella sandwich at the Mercado Municipal is €8. A chopp in a neighbourhood boteco is €2.30, less than half what a Jupiler costs on a Brussels terrace. A full plate at a por quilo lunch spot, rice, beans, grilled meat and salad, comes to about €5. Dinner for two with drinks at a decent restaurant is €37.

Brussels in late November is a write-off. Highs of 7°C, dark by half four, and a drizzle that never quite decides to become rain. São Paulo is heading into the southern-hemisphere summer. Days sit at 27°C, nights around 18°C. It is humid, and most afternoons a thunderstorm rolls through for an hour then clears. Pack for heat and bring one rain jacket.

🎯 What to do
São Paulo is not a beach city. It is 12 million people, endless restaurants, and a nightlife that runs until sunrise.
Ibirapuera Park — The city's green lung: lakes, cycle paths and three Niemeyer buildings. Locals run, picnic and play music here every weekend.
MASP and Avenida Paulista — Brazil's best art collection hangs on glass easels above the floor. On Sundays the whole avenue closes to cars and fills with stalls and buskers.
Mercado Municipal — The 1930s market hall downtown. Turn up hungry and order the mortadella sandwich or a pastel de bacalhau at the counter.
Vila Madalena after dark — The bar district. Samba circles at weekends, craft beer pubs, and the street-art alley of Beco do Batman a few blocks away.

São Paulo's two airports reach the whole country, and the coast is a bus ride away.
Rio de Janeiro — The obvious one. Beaches, mountains and Carnival energy, an hour by plane or six hours up the coast by coach.
Paraty — Colonial port town of cobbled streets and rainforest beaches, about five hours south by bus.
Ilhabela — Atlantic-forest island of waterfalls and quiet coves, four hours away by bus and ferry.
Foz do Iguaçu — The Iguaçu falls on the Argentine border, a 90-minute flight west.
Florianópolis — Surf beaches and lagoons on Santa Catarina island, an hour south by air.
