Canada's largest city has been on the "someday" list for a lot of Dutch travellers. Air Transat flies there non-stop from Amsterdam this autumn from €340 return. The flight takes six hours. There are no layovers. At this price, someday might as well be September.

💰 How far does your money go?
Toronto is not a budget destination, but the euro-to-Canadian-dollar exchange rate softens the blow. One euro gets you about 1.50 CAD. A craft beer on Queen West costs around CAD 10 (€7). A peameal bacon sandwich at St. Lawrence Market, one of the city's great snacks, is about CAD 11 (€7). Budget around €80–100 per person per day for food, drink, and transit, and you will eat well without stress. The sightseeing, the waterfront, the ravines, the neighbourhoods, is largely free.
☀️ The weather
September in Toronto runs between 15 and 24°C: warm days, cool evenings, and very little rain. October cools to 8–16°C, but it brings something that makes it worth packing a jacket. The Don Valley ravines and High Park turn deep red and amber, and the whole city looks like a different place. Both months work well.
🏨 Where to stay
Toronto's best neighbourhoods for visitors are the Entertainment District, Kensington, and Queen West, all within easy walking distance of each other.
Hotel Victoria Toronto — 8.3/10 · From €85/night A classic downtown hotel right in the financial district. Compact rooms, good location, and the most reasonable prices in the city centre.
Le Germain Hotel Maple Leaf Square — 8.8/10 · From €170/night Slick boutique hotel steps from the waterfront and the CN Tower. Excellent design, proper beds, and a restaurant that is worth the tab.
The St. Regis Toronto — 9.1/10 · From €450/night One of the finest addresses in the city. Concierge-level service, a full spa, and rooms that overlook Lake Ontario. The kind of hotel that makes a trip feel genuinely special.
🎯 What to do
Toronto is bigger than it looks on a map. Give it more than a weekend.
Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) — Runs 10–20 September. The city's biggest cultural event fills the King Street Entertainment District with hundreds of premieres, screenings, and the best people-watching in Canada.
High Park in autumn — October is peak colour season. The park's ravine trails and Japanese cherry grove turn extraordinary shades of red and gold. Free to enter, and worth a full morning.
St. Lawrence Market — One of the best food markets in North America, open Tuesday to Saturday. The Saturday farmers' market is a proper event. The peameal bacon sandwich from Carousel Bakery is obligatory.
Nuit Blanche — October 3, running from 7pm to sunrise. Toronto's all-night contemporary art crawl transforms the city centre into an open-air gallery. Free entry and unlike anything else in the country.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Toronto sits at the edge of a huge country. Use it as a starting point.
Niagara Falls — 90 minutes by car or coach. The Canadian side is spectacular in a way no photograph quite captures. Niagara-on-the-Lake just down the road has good wineries and a slower pace.
Muskoka — 2 hours north by car. Ontario's lake district, all clear water and forests turning red in October. The classic Canadian autumn, without a flight to get there.
Algonquin Provincial Park — 3 hours northeast. One of Ontario's finest wilderness parks, with moose sightings common in September and October and autumn foliage that peaks in mid-October.
Montreal — 5 hours by coach or one hour by flight. French-speaking, food-obsessed, and architecturally unlike anywhere else in Canada. A completely different country within the same one.
September and October are arguably the best months to see Toronto. The flight is non-stop and the price is solid. That is usually enough reason.
