💰 How far does your money go?
A beer in a Frankfurt bar costs around €5. In a local bar near Cancun's Hotel Zone, the same beer is €3. Three tacos and a soda at a street stall come to roughly €7, the price of a Wurst snack back home. Step off the resort strip and your money goes considerably further.
☀️ The weather
Frankfurt in June sits at around 22°C. Decent, but unpredictable. Cancun in June is 32°C, with the sea at 28°C. The rainy season has technically started, but June mornings are reliably clear. Afternoon showers arrive, last an hour, and leave. The heat stays.
🏨 Where to stay
Cancun's Hotel Zone stretches along a narrow barrier island between the lagoon and the Caribbean Sea.
Mayan Monkey Cancun – 8.5/10 · From €42/night Social hostel with private rooms, a rooftop pool, and lively common areas. The most affordable way to stay in the Hotel Zone without sacrificing the experience.
Renaissance Cancun Resort & Marina – 8.6/10 · From €145/night Marina views, multiple pools, and beach access in the heart of the zone. Solid mid-range resort with everything you need and nothing you don't.
NIZUC Resort & Spa – 9.3/10 · From €420/night At the quiet southern tip of the Hotel Zone. A private beach, six restaurants, and a pace that feels a world away from the strip. The best address in Cancun for those who want proper luxury.
🎯 What to do
The Hotel Zone is just the start.
Chichen Itza – Two and a half hours by bus. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Arrive when the gates open at 8am to get two hours with the ruins almost to yourself before the tour groups arrive.
Cenotes – The Yucatan sits above the world's largest underground river system. The Ruta de los Cenotes is a 20-minute drive from Cancun, with a dozen natural freshwater pools to swim through. Cold, clear, and completely unlike anything in Europe.
Isla Mujeres – Twenty minutes by ferry from Puerto Juarez. A small, car-free island with the clearest water on the coast. Rent a golf cart for the day and stop at Playa Norte.
Coco Bongo – Cancun's legendary nightclub. Acrobats overhead, live acts, and a crowd that keeps going until dawn. Loud, theatrical, and nothing like a Frankfurt Kneipe.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Cancun is a gateway. The Yucatan alone could fill two weeks.
Tulum – One hour south by bus or collectivo. Mayan ruins above the sea, cenotes a short walk from the beach, and a completely different pace. Works as a day trip or an overnight.
Playa del Carmen – 45 minutes south. A livelier beach town with good restaurants, live music on Quinta Avenida, and ferries to Cozumel. Less resort-heavy than Cancun.
Cozumel – 30 minutes by ferry from Playa del Carmen. One of the top dive sites in the world. The reefs are exceptional even for snorkellers.
Merida – Four hours west. The colonial capital of the Yucatan. Coloured facades, local markets, and none of the resort crowds. A proper Mexican city.
Non-stop from Frankfurt. €537. June is filling up.
