London between November and March is a test of character. Dark before 5pm, cold enough to feel through your coat, and the Central line is always delayed. Singapore is 10,747 kilometres in the other direction: 28°C, street food for £3, and a skyline that glows at night. Singapore Airlines, British Airways and Qantas fly there non-stop. From £564 return.

💰 How far does your money go?
A full plate at a hawker centre, Singapore's open-air food courts where the locals actually eat, costs between £2.50 and £4.60. Chicken rice, laksa, char kway teow. Proper food, not a meal deal. A can of Tiger beer from 7-Eleven: under £2. Less than a Zone 1 single. Broadly, Singapore runs about 18% cheaper than London across the board.
☀️ The weather
London in November is already cold and grey: 9–10°C, dark before 5pm. December and January are worse. In Singapore, those same months run at 27–29°C, with afternoon downpours from the northeast monsoon. Warm and occasionally wet. January to March is marginally drier at 26–29°C. The humidity never fully disappears, but coming from a London winter, you won't mind.
🏨 Where to stay
Singapore rewards you for staying central. The MRT connects the whole island in under 30 minutes.
Ibis Singapore on Bencoolen — 8.1/10 · From £90/night Clean and well-located, five minutes from Bugis MRT. Does exactly what it needs to do, without pretending otherwise.
The Warehouse Hotel — 9.1/10 · From £190/night A converted 1895 spice warehouse on the Singapore River. One of the most distinctive mid-range hotels in the city, with excellent cocktails downstairs.
Raffles Singapore — 9.3/10 · From £500/night The original. Colonial courtyards, the Long Bar, butler service in every suite. More institution than hotel.
🎯 What to do
Singapore is small enough to cover in a few days. It is interesting enough that you will not want to stop there.
Gardens by the Bay — The Supertree Grove lights up after dark in a free sound and light show. The Cloud Forest dome, a mountain of mist and tropical plants under a glass ceiling, is worth the entrance on its own.
Maxwell Food Centre — One of Singapore's most famous hawker centres. Tian Tian's Hainanese chicken rice has had a queue since the 1980s. Go at lunch, bring small change.
Chinatown, Little India and Arab Street — Three neighbourhoods, three completely different worlds. Walk all three in a morning. Temples, street food and colour on every corner.
Marina Bay SkyPark — The observation deck above Marina Bay Sands, 57 storeys up, with clear views across the city, the harbour and into Malaysia. Go at sunset.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Singapore is one of the best flight hubs in Asia. Use it as a starting point.
Bali, Indonesia — Three hours by direct flight. Beaches at Seminyak, rice terraces in Ubud, temples, and a full week of doing very little. The easiest tropical extension from Singapore.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — One hour by plane or five hours by train through the rainforest. Street food as good as Singapore's, at half the price. The Petronas Towers are still worth seeing.
Bintan, Indonesia — One hour by ferry from Tanah Merah terminal. White sand, clear water, and beach resorts with none of the airport chaos.
Phuket, Thailand — Two and a half hours by plane. Use it as a base to island-hop south through the Andaman Sea.
From London. Non-stop. From £564. It is November. You already know what the alternative looks like.
