Desert safari — Dune bashing at sunset, dinner under the stars, camel rides. The full evening version is worth every dirham.
Dubai Fountain show — Free. Every 30 minutes from 6pm, right below the Burj Khalifa. The world's largest choreographed fountain. Stay for at least two shows.

Musandam Peninsula, Oman — The Norway of Arabia. Dramatic fjords and turquoise water, 1.5 hours by car.
Muscat, Oman — One hour by flight. Grand mosques, old souks, whitewashed forts. A completely different pace from Dubai.
The Maldives — Four hours by flight. Overwater bungalows, coral reefs, no noise. The classic add-on from Dubai.
Abu Dhabi — 90 minutes by road. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the Formula 1 circuit. A solid day trip or overnight.
