💰 How far does your money go?
Cancun runs two price realities side by side. In the hotel zone, a cocktail at a beach club starts at £12. Step outside and things change quickly. Three tacos from a street stall: under £2. A cold local beer in a downtown bar: £1.50. A full sit-down dinner away from the resort strip: £6 to £8 per head. The same money that covers one round at a pub buys you dinner and drinks in the city.
☀️ The weather
June in the UK averages 18°C and enough cloud cover to disappoint. Cancun sits at 31°C, with warm Caribbean water and morning sunshine most days. Afternoon tropical showers come through and pass in under an hour. Humidity is high but manageable. It's the start of low season, which means fewer tourists and better hotel rates.
🏨 Where to stay
From social hostels to full all-inclusives, Cancun covers every budget.
Mayan Monkey Cancun - 8.8/10 · From £35/night Social hotel in the hotel zone with a pool and a lively crowd. Good for those who plan to spend most of their time out.
Residence Inn by Marriott Cancun - 8.8/10 · From £130/night Spacious suites with kitchens, complimentary breakfast, and an outdoor pool. One of the better value options in the hotel zone.
Hyatt Ziva Cancun - 9.2/10 · From £320/night All-inclusive resort on a peninsula with ocean on three sides. Multiple restaurants, unlimited drinks, and strong reviews across the board.
🎯 What to do
Cancun is both a beach resort and a base for something far older.
Chichen Itza. Three hours west by bus. One of the most impressive Mayan sites anywhere, with the iconic El Castillo pyramid at its centre. Go early to avoid the afternoon heat.
Cenotes. Freshwater sinkholes scattered across the Yucatan. Some are open-air, some underground, some hidden in the jungle. Clear water, and genuinely unlike anything else.
Playa Delfines. The best free beach in Cancun, at the far end of the hotel zone. Proper turquoise water, white sand, no entrance fee.
Coco Bongo. Cancun's most famous nightclub. Flying acrobats, live performances, and an open bar. Loud, chaotic, and worth doing once.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Cancun works best as a base, not a final stop.
Isla Mujeres. A 20-minute ferry from downtown Cancun. Golf carts, hammocks over the water, and a completely different pace.
Tulum. Two hours south by bus. Mayan ruins on the cliff above the Caribbean, boutique hotels in the jungle, and cenotes throughout the area.
Playa del Carmen. One hour south. A walkable town with good restaurants and a ferry to Cozumel for diving.
Valladolid. Two hours inland. Colonial architecture, local markets, and Cenote Zaci right in the centre of town.
