💰 How far does your money go?

Cape Town is dramatically cheaper than London once you land. A local beer costs around £1.30. A full sit-down meal at a restaurant runs £7–£9. A daily budget of £50 covers food, drinks, and getting around the city with ease — less than a Zone 1 Uber home on a Friday night.

☀️ The weather

September and October are Cape Town's spring. Temperatures reach 20–23°C during the day, with clear skies and an occasional burst of wind off the Atlantic. Evenings cool to around 13–15°C, so pack a light layer. Sea temperatures climb toward 18°C by October, and whale season is in full swing along the nearby coastline.

🏨 Where to stay

Cape Town has everything from surf lodge dorms to five-star Waterfront hotels.

Ashanti Lodge Gardens — 8.8/10 · From £28/night Social backpacker lodge in the Gardens neighbourhood, five minutes from the Company's Garden. Pool, bar, and a good crowd of solo travellers.

Portswood Hotel — 8.5/10 · From £90/night Inside the V&A Waterfront complex, steps from the marina. Clean, comfortable, and well-placed for exploring both the city centre and the waterfront.

Taj Cape Town — 9.2/10 · From £240/night Two landmark heritage buildings in the heart of the CBD. Rooftop pool, spa, and some of the best views of Table Mountain in the city.

🎯 What to do

Cape Town packs outdoor adventure, colonial history, and serious food into a very small area.

Table Mountain — Take the cable car or hike the Platteklip Gorge trail. The views from the top cover the entire peninsula, both oceans, and the Winelands on a clear day.

Cape of Good Hope drive — The peninsula road south passes through Chapman's Peak, Boulders Beach (African penguins), Simon's Town, and ends at the southwestern tip of Africa. A full day, easily.

Robben Island — A ferry from the V&A Waterfront takes you to the island where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years. Tours are led by former political prisoners. Sobering and essential.

Bo-Kaap and the V&A Waterfront — The Cape Malay quarter is all pastel-coloured houses and spice-thick cooking. Head to the Waterfront in the evening for seafood, craft beer, and live music along the marina.

🗺️ Where to go from here

Cape Town is the obvious base, but the Western Cape stretches well beyond the city.

Stellenbosch — 45 minutes east through the mountains. South Africa's wine capital: Cape Dutch estates, excellent restaurants, and bottle prices that will make you laugh.

Hermanus — 90 minutes east along the coast. One of the best land-based whale-watching spots in the world. Southern right whales are reliably present through October.

Franschhoek — 75 minutes from Cape Town. A small mountain valley with arguably the best restaurant scene in South Africa. A wine tram connects the surrounding estates.

Garden Route — Start 4 hours east and drive as far as you like: Knysna Lagoon, Tsitsikamma Forest, Storms River gorge. South Africa's most scenic stretch of coastline.

Norse Atlantic's non-stop from London to Cape Town is rare at this price. These dates will not last.
