Madeira is not just one island.
Porto Santo: 2.5-hour ferry from Funchal. Nine kilometres of golden sandy beach, rare on this side of the Atlantic. A completely different pace.
Desertas Islands: Boat tours from Funchal Marina. Uninhabited and wild, with dolphins, sperm whales, and monk seals.
Porto Moniz: 1.5-hour drive west along the coast. Natural volcanic lava pools to swim in, right at the edge of the Atlantic.
