Valencia in October means 22°C and shorts on the beach. Montreal in October means golden maple leaves the size of your hand, a city speaking two languages at once, and air that actually feels like autumn. Air Transat flies non-stop between the two, with return fares from €387.

💰 How far does your money go?

Montreal is not Valencia for prices. A beer in a local bar costs around €6, compared to less than €2 for a caña back home. But the food culture makes it worthwhile: a smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz's Deli, the city's most iconic lunch spot, costs around €9. A poutine at La Banquise, which serves it until 3am, costs €12. You are not going to save money on food and drink. You are going to spend it somewhere genuinely different.

☀️ The weather

Valencia in September is still full summer: 27°C, dry, and predictable. Montreal in September sits at 15–22°C, warm enough for a t-shirt during the day with a jacket needed at night. By October the temperature drops to 5–15°C and the city turns orange. The maple forests surrounding Montreal go into full autumn colour: something that simply does not happen on the Mediterranean coast. If you have never seen a North American autumn, this is a very good reason to go.

🏨 Where to stay

Old Montreal and the Plateau-Mont-Royal are the two best areas to base yourself. Both are worth a short extra walk from the cheaper hotels.

Auberge Saint-Paul — 8.3/10 · From €85/night Boutique hotel in the heart of Old Montreal, steps from the cobblestones of Rue Saint-Paul and the Old Port. Compact rooms, central location, and genuinely good value for where it sits.

HONEYROSE Hotel Montreal — 8.7/10 · From €175/night Art deco-inspired hotel on Boulevard René-Lévesque with one of the better cocktail bars in the city. Close to everything, well-designed, and a step above standard mid-range.

Hotel Birks Montreal — 9.0/10 · From €310/night Housed in a former jewellery flagship from 1894, with high ceilings, a spa, and a rooftop terrace. Right on Phillips Square in the centre of downtown. The address alone justifies the price.

🎯 What to do

Montreal is one of the most liveable cities in North America, and one of the most interesting to visit.

Notre-Dame Basilica — Gothic Revival cathedral built in 1829, with one of the most dramatic interiors in the Americas. The nightly light show, Aura Montreal, runs every evening inside the basilica and is genuinely worth the ticket.

Mount Royal Park — Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the same architect behind Central Park in New York, in 1876. In October it is surrounded by maple trees in full colour. Walk or cycle to the summit belvedere for views across the entire city.

Jean-Talon Market — The largest open-air market in North America, in the Little Italy neighbourhood. Go on a Saturday morning: local cheese, cured meats, fresh produce, and food stalls with things you will not find anywhere else in Canada.

Old Port and the Saint Lawrence River — Rent a bike and follow the Lachine Canal, or take a river cruise past the islands. The Grande Roue de Montréal, a 60-metre observation wheel on the waterfront, gives you the best panoramic view of the city.

🗺️ Where to go from here

Montreal is one of the best gateway cities in North America. There is a lot within reach.

Quebec City — Three hours by train or car. A walled city built on a cliff above the Saint Lawrence, with a UNESCO-listed old town and architecture that feels more European than anywhere else on the continent.

Ottawa — Two hours west by car or bus. Canada's capital is compact and easy to explore: the national museums are free to enter, and Parliament Hill is walkable from the centre.

The Laurentians — One hour north by car. Mountain lakes, small villages, and in October some of the best fall foliage in the province. Mont-Tremblant is the main town and worth an overnight.

Niagara Falls — Six hours by car via Toronto. Many travellers combine both cities in one trip. The Canadian side is the one to see the falls from.

€387 return from Valencia, non-stop with Air Transat. September and October have solid availability. Fares at this level do not stay there long.
