💰 How Far Does Your Money Go?

A plate of Pad Thai from a Bangkok street stall costs ฿60 — that's £1.20. A Chang beer from a 7-Eleven runs £1.40. Dinner for two at a proper sit-down Thai restaurant, air-con included, comes to about £10. For context, that's less than two pints in a Zone 2 pub. Your all-in daily budget in Bangkok — accommodation, food, transport, everything — runs around £47 at the low end. In London, that doesn't cover much.

☀️ The Weather

May through July is Bangkok's shoulder season. Expect afternoon showers and high humidity, but temperatures hold at 30–32°C throughout. That's a consistent 12°C warmer than the average London July. The rain in Bangkok typically arrives mid to late afternoon and clears quickly — mornings are bright and ideal for temples, markets, and outdoor exploring. The upside: fewer tourists, lower hotel rates, and cheaper tours across the board.

🏨 Where to Stay

Three well-rated options across the budget range.

Lub d Bangkok Silom — 8.5/10 · From £30/night Bangkok's benchmark affordable hotel, right in the middle of Silom. Private rooms with air-con, a lively rooftop area, walkable to Lumphini Park and the night bazaar. Best for solo travellers who want atmosphere without paying for extras they won't use.

Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok — 8.3/10 · From £72/night Sukhumvit location, large outdoor pool, and a breakfast that sets you up before a full day on your feet. Solid mid-range choice with enough space to feel like a proper base.

Grande Centre Point Hotel Terminal 21 — 9.4/10 · From £88/night Five stars and a 9.4 on Booking.com. Attached directly to Terminal 21 shopping mall, with BTS and MRT access from the building. Outdoor pool, 498 rooms. The obvious luxury pick at this price-to-rating ratio.

🎯 What to Do

Bangkok earns its reputation. Don't try to do it all — do this.

Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew — Thailand's most iconic site. Gold spires, the Emerald Buddha, and the kind of scale that photos don't quite capture. Go before 9am to beat the crowds and the heat.

Muay Thai at Rajadamnern Stadium — One of the most intense live sport experiences anywhere. Real fighters, a roaring crowd, ringside seats from £25. Nothing else in Bangkok comes close for atmosphere.

Bangkok Street Food Night Tour — A guided food walk through the stalls locals actually eat at — fried oyster omelette, boat noodles, mango sticky rice. Three hours, a dozen dishes, no tourist markup.

Chao Phraya Luxury Evening Cruise — Bangkok from the river at night. Illuminated temples, the Memorial Bridge, the skyline drifting past. From £45.

🗺️ Where to Go From Here

Bangkok is a gateway as much as a destination. Domestic flights in Thailand are cheap — often under £30.

Chiang Mai — 1-hour domestic flight from £20. Thailand's northern capital: temples, a thriving night bazaar, cooking classes, and ethical elephant sanctuaries. A completely different pace from Bangkok. Search flights

Phuket — 1.5-hour domestic flight from £25. Jumping-off point for Koh Phi Phi and Maya Bay. Stay on the island or use it as a base — it's the boats that make it worth the trip. Search flights

Koh Samui — 1-hour domestic flight from £30. White-sand beaches, clear water, Ang Thong National Marine Park for kayaking and snorkelling. Best island for first-timers to Thailand. Search flights

Krabi — 1-hour domestic flight from £25. Limestone cliffs, longtail boats, and some of the best beaches in Southeast Asia — without the development of Phuket. Search flights

Ayutthaya — 1.5-hour train for around £3. Thailand's ancient capital, UNESCO World Heritage Site. Temple ruins, pagodas, Buddha statues. An easy and unmissable day trip.
