💰 How far does your money go?
Street food is where Mauritius makes sense. A dholl puri, the island's stuffed flatbread, costs about €0.50 from a roadside stall, and three of them is lunch. A 0.5L Phoenix beer is around €1.80 in a local bar, less than a caña on most Madrid terraces. A sit-down Creole meal, rougaille with rice, runs about €9, where a menú del día in Madrid is closer to €14.
☀️ The weather
September is the dry season in Mauritius. Daytime highs sit at 25°C and drop to about 17°C after dark, so pack a layer for the evening. The sea holds at 23°C, warm enough to stay in for hours. Rain comes in short isolated bursts, and you get around seven hours of sun a day.
🏨 Where to stay
The north around Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie has the calm water and the nightlife. The west coast at Flic en Flac has the sunsets and the diving.
Le Palmiste Resort & Spa · 8.1/10 · from €75/night A short walk from Trou aux Biches beach, with two pools and a swim-up bar.
Récif Attitude · 8.6/10 · from €150/night Adults-only and half-board, set right over the reef at Pointe aux Piments.
Trou aux Biches Beachcomber · 9.0/10 · from €340/night Villas along one of the best beaches on the island, six restaurants, a spa set in a garden.
🎯 What to do
The island is small. You can be hiking a peninsula in the morning and floating in a lagoon by lunch.
Hike Le Morne Brabant: a UNESCO-listed basalt monolith on the southwest tip. The guided route to the summit takes about three hours return and ends with a view down both coasts.
Chamarel: the Seven-Coloured Earth, a dune of red, violet and blue volcanic clay, with the island's tallest waterfall a few minutes away.
Île aux Cerfs: a catamaran day out to an islet in the east lagoon, with snorkelling stops and a barbecue lunch on board.
Port Louis central market: stalls of tamarind, chilli cakes and alouda, a milky rose-flavoured drink, in the middle of the capital.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Mauritius is mostly a final stop. But two more islands sit within easy reach.
Rodrigues: a 90-minute flight east to a quieter, hillier island with empty beaches and octopus curry.
Réunion: a 45-minute hop to the French volcanic island next door, for hiking craters and cirques.
Northern islets: day sails from Grand Baie to Île Plate and Îlot Gabriel, uninhabited and ringed by reef.
