💰 How Far Does Your Money Go?
In northeast Brazil, a prato feito -- the classic lunch of rice, beans, salad and grilled meat -- costs €2 to €3. A cold beer on the beach, €1.30. A coffee, €1.50. That is a full afternoon for less than a menú del día back home. Even in São Paulo, South America's most expensive city, your euros go considerably further than in Spain.
🌊 Fortaleza
The capital of Ceará sits on 25 km of Atlantic coast. Meireles is the social centre of the city -- busy, walkable, lined with bars and restaurants. Praia do Futuro is wider and wilder, backed by coconut groves. But Fortaleza's real pull is as a gateway: within a few hours you reach some of Brazil's best and least-crowded coastline.
What to do:
- Iracema Beach -- The social heart of the city. Sunset promenade, street food, bars and live music every evening.
- Dragão do Mar Cultural Centre -- Museums, art galleries, cinema and open-air concerts in one vast complex.
- Canoa Quebrada -- Red sandstone cliffs, a laid-back village and paragliding. 160 km southeast, worth the journey.
- Jericoacoara -- Towering dunes, crystal lagoons and hammocks in the water. One of Brazil's best-kept secrets, 300 km west.

🏛️ Recife
Built across rivers and islands, Recife has a colonial old town, Atlantic reef beaches, and a Carnival tradition second only to Rio. Less touristy than it deserves, richer in culture than most people expect. Olinda is 6 km away and UNESCO-listed. Porto de Galinhas, one of Brazil's finest beaches, is an hour south.
What to do:
- Marco Zero -- The city's founding square. Colonial architecture, live frevo music and open-air bars at weekends.
- Ricardo Brennand Institute -- A private castle in Atlantic forest with an extraordinary art collection and sculpture garden.
- Olinda -- UNESCO-listed hilltop town with baroque churches and pastel houses. 6 km from Recife, a short taxi ride.
- Porto de Galinhas -- Natural reef pools and some of Brazil's clearest water. 60 km south, worth a full day.

🌆 São Paulo
Not a beach destination. São Paulo is 12 million people, relentless energy and the best food scene in South America. Think Madrid's intensity multiplied by ten, with Japanese neighbourhoods, sprawling modernist parks and a restaurant scene that could keep you busy for weeks.
What to do:
- MASP -- Brutalist concrete suspended over Avenida Paulista. Velázquez, Van Gogh and Renoir inside. Free on Sundays.
- Mercadão -- Grand municipal market under 1920s stained-glass windows. Get the mortadella sandwich (€8, worth every cent).
- Ibirapuera Park -- Oscar Niemeyer pavilions, cycling paths and Sunday outdoor markets. São Paulo's breathing space.
- Liberdade -- The largest Japanese district outside Japan. Ramen, izakayas and weekend street markets.
