💰 How Far Does Your Money Go?
A Coral beer costs €2.50 in Funchal. A sit-down meal at a local restaurant starts at €10. A full three-course dinner for two comes to around €50. Compare that to a round in any Manchester or Edinburgh pub and you will quickly realise this island makes financial sense. The daily budget for a mid-range traveller sits at around €80-100 all in.
☀️ The Weather
June in Manchester: a high of 20°C and rain on 11 out of 30 days. Edinburgh is cooler still, 17°C average, 14 rainy days in June and 14 more in July. Funchal in June: 23°C highs, six hours of sun daily, sea at 21°C and just 18mm of rain for the whole month. July in Funchal is warmer and drier. The island sits in the Atlantic, southwest of Portugal, and gets almost nothing of the British summer misery. Pack light.

🎯 What to Do
Madeira is not a sit-by-the-pool island. It rewards those who go looking.
Monte Palace Tropical Gardens - 17 acres of rare plants, koi ponds, and mosaic pathways cut into the hillside above Funchal. One of the most underrated gardens in Europe.
Mercado dos Lavradores - Funchal's historic covered market. Tropical fruit, fresh fish, local flowers, and the kind of colour you will not find in a supermarket. Go in the morning when it is busiest.
Madeira Wine Tasting at H.M. Borges - The winery has operated in the centre of Funchal since 1877. Guided tastings run from dry to sweet, with the history to match.
Pico do Arieiro Sunrise Hike - At 1,818m, Madeira's third-highest peak. Leave before dawn and you will be above the clouds for one of the most dramatic sunrises in the Atlantic.
🗺️ Where to Go From Here
Madeira is an island. Porto Santo is the one next to it.
Porto Santo - A 9km stretch of golden sand, reachable by ferry from Funchal in 2.5 hours. Zero crowds relative to Madeira, nothing to do but lie on the beach. Take the first ferry, come back the same day.
Tenerife, Canary Islands - A short flight south. Combine both for a two-island Atlantic trip with a wider range of beaches, nightlife, and scenery.
£44 for non-stop to Madeira in June. Not a lot of reasons to wait.
