💰 How Far Does Your Money Go?
Canada costs more than home once you're there. A pint at a Halifax pub runs around €6, a sit-down dinner €20-25. But you flew non-stop from Lisbon from €324, less than a weekend trip in August with accommodation. A lobster roll on the waterfront costs around €16. Halifax's official city food, the donair (spiced beef in a pita with sweet garlic sauce) comes in under €7. For what you're getting, the maths still works.
☀️ The Weather
In Lisbon right now, it's 33°C and the beaches are packed by 10am. Halifax in summer runs 18-24°C, proper Atlantic weather fresh off the ocean. June brings rolling fog that lifts by midday; July and August are the clearest months, with long days, blue skies, and cool evenings where you'll actually want to be outside. Pack one light jacket. That's all you'll need.
🏨 Where to Stay
Halifax has a solid range, from reliable downtown options to one of the best waterfront hotels in Canada.
Hampton Inn by Hilton Halifax Downtown (8.4/10) · From €110/night Modern, central, indoor pool. Walk to the waterfront in 10 minutes. Reliable base for exploring the city.
The Westin Nova Scotian (8.7/10) · From €155/night Halifax landmark since 1930. Heritage building at the rail station, with indoor pool, full spa, Westin quality in a genuinely beautiful property.
Muir, a Luxury Collection Hotel (9.1/10) · From €290/night Opened in 2021, directly on the waterfront. Floor-to-ceiling harbour views, spa, farm-to-table restaurant. The best hotel in Halifax.
🎯 What to Do
Halifax is compact, walkable, and has more going on than it looks.
Harbour Hopper Tour: Part bus, part boat. The amphibious vehicle drives through the city streets then launches directly into the harbour. Sounds gimmicky, turns out to be genuinely good. Check on TripAdvisor
Halifax Citadel: The star-shaped fort has been here since 1749. Free entry from 19 June to 7 September 2026. Two hours, great city views, cannon firing at noon. Check on TripAdvisor
The Donair Crawl: Halifax's official city food. Spiced beef, tomatoes, onion, and sweet garlic sauce in a pita. Start at King of Donair on Quinpool Road, the original since 1973. Then find a pub. Halifax has more pubs per capita than any city in Canada. Check on TripAdvisor
Bay of Fundy: World's Highest Tides. 160 billion tonnes of water move in and out twice a day. At low tide, you walk on the ocean floor. Nothing like this exists in Europe. 45 minutes from Halifax. Don't skip it. Check on TripAdvisor
🗺️ Where to Go From Here
Halifax is a base, not just a destination. Nova Scotia is one of Canada's most beautiful provinces, and most of it is under 90 minutes away.
Peggy's Cove: Canada's most photographed lighthouse on a raw granite coastline. 45 minutes from Halifax. Go early.
Lunenburg: UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pastel 18th-century buildings on a working harbour. One of the most beautiful small towns in Atlantic Canada.
Bay of Fundy: Worth repeating. Walk the ocean floor at low tide. Watch 16 metres of water rush back in. Bring waterproof boots.
Annapolis Valley: Nova Scotia's wine country, with over 15 wineries in rolling countryside. One hour from Halifax. Genuinely underrated.
Truro: Victoria Park in the city centre: old-growth forest, waterfalls, and a dramatic gorge. 45 minutes north. A half-day well spent.
WestJet runs non-stop from June to August. Halifax in summer is one of the most underrated trips in the Atlantic world, cooler than Lisbon, wilder, and from €324 return, there's no real reason to wait.
