💰 How far does your money go?

Hong Kong looks expensive, then you start eating like a local. A bowl of wonton noodles or a plate of char siu rice at a cha chaan teng runs £4 to £7. Dim sum for two with tea rarely passes £18. A bottle of Tsingtao in a local diner is about £2, roughly a third of the £6.75 you now hand over for a pint in a London pub. The Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour costs 40p against the £2.90 you tap for a single Tube stop. The harbourfront, the markets, the hiking trails and most temples are free. Budget travellers get by on £55 to £70 a day.

☀️ The weather

You are landing in Hong Kong's best season. Early October is still warm and humid at 28°C, easing to 25°C by month's end. November brings dry, clear days around 22°C, the ideal window for the Peak trail and the harbour walk. December settles into cool 18°C afternoons and 14°C nights, so pack a light jacket. Rain is infrequent from November on, and the sea holds above 25°C well into autumn.

🏨 Where to stay

Kowloon side for the skyline view, Hong Kong Island for the bars and the walkable centre.

Ibis Hong Kong Central and Sheung Wan · 8.2/10 · From £75/night On Hong Kong Island, steps from the MTR. Small rooms, reliably clean, easy for a first trip.

Hotel ICON · 8.9/10 · From £160/night Tsim Sha Tsui, harbour views from the upper floors and one of the best hotel breakfasts in the city.

Rosewood Hong Kong · 9.3/10 · From £650/night Waterfront tower on the Kowloon side, named the world's best hotel in 2025. A splurge that earns it.

🎯 What to do

Hong Kong rewards a tight itinerary. It is small, vertical and fast.

Victoria Peak: Ride the 1888 Peak Tram up for the skyline shot, then walk the flat Lugard Road loop for the same view without the crowds.

Old-school dim sum: Point at a trolley cart in a clattering tea hall, take what looks good, wash it down with tea. Under £10 a head.

Aqua Luna junk boat: Board the red-sail junk at dusk and cross Victoria Harbour as the Symphony of Lights show fires off the towers.

Temple Street Night Market: Fortune tellers, clay-pot rice and knock-off everything. Busiest after 8pm.

🗺️ Where to go from here

Hong Kong is a launchpad. Ferries and short flights fan out in every direction.

Macau: Portuguese colonial squares, egg tarts and mega-casinos. One hour by ferry, passport needed.

Lamma Island: Car-free, seafood restaurants and an easy coastal walk. 30 minutes by ferry from Central.

Cheung Chau: A working fishing village with beaches and no traffic. 40 minutes by ferry.

Lantau Island: The giant bronze Tian Tan Buddha, a cable car ride and the Tai O stilt houses. MTR to Tung Chung, then the cable car up.

Taipei: Night markets, hot springs and the best beef noodle soup in Asia. Under two hours by flight.

Lock in the dates, because fares to Asia this low never last.
