💰 How far does your money go?
Hong Kong looks expensive and then surprises you. A meal at a cha chaan teng, milk tea included, runs about £5.70. A plate of char siu over rice with greens is £4.70. A local draught beer is £5.30, and the Star Ferry across the harbour costs around 30p. Order the roast pork, the greens and the beer and you have still spent less than one pint in a London pub.
☀️ The weather
September and October are warm and sticky, highs near 28°C and nights around 23°C, with the odd heavy downpour that clears within the hour. November and December are the reward: cool, dry and clear, about 20°C by day and 16°C after dark. January to March stays mild at 16 to 19°C, grey some mornings but comfortable for walking. Pack light cotton for the autumn dates and a warm layer if you travel in winter.
🏨 Where to stay
Hong Kong Island for the bars and the Peak tram, Kowloon for the markets and the view back at the skyline.

🎯 What to do
A city of vertical streets, ferries and food stalls. Do it in layers.
Victoria Peak at dusk: Take the tram up before sunset and watch the towers light up over the harbour. Go on a weekday to skip the worst of the queues.
Dragon's Back trail: A ridge walk on Hong Kong Island with sea on both sides, ending at the beach in Shek O. Around three hours, easy to moderate.
Temple Street night market: Kowloon after dark, with fortune tellers, clay-pot rice and stalls of knock-off everything. Busiest from 8pm.
Star Ferry and the Symphony of Lights: Cross from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui on the old green ferry, then watch the 8pm light show fire off the skyline from the waterfront.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Hong Kong is a launchpad as much as a destination.
Macau: Portuguese colonial streets, egg tarts and the biggest casinos in the world. One hour by ferry from the city.
Lantau Island: The bronze Tian Tan Buddha, a cable car over the hills and the stilt village of Tai O. About an hour by MTR and cable car.
Cheung Chau: A car-free fishing island with seafood shacks and quiet beaches. Forty minutes by ferry from Central.
Shenzhen: Mainland China's tech capital, with huge malls and electronics markets right over the border. Fourteen minutes by high-speed train.
Guangzhou: Cantonese food at its source, Pearl River cruises and a 600-metre tower. Under an hour by high-speed train.
