A plate of nasi lemak from a roadside stall costs RM4-5, about €1. A glass of teh tarik runs RM2.50, roughly €0.50. The price of one Melange in a Viennese coffee house covers breakfast, lunch and a couple of teas at a KL hawker centre. The one thing that isn't cheap is alcohol: a can of beer starts at RM15, around €3, so the savings are in the food.

Kuala Lumpur runs on street food, skyscrapers and jungle just outside the city limits.
Batu Caves: Climb the 272 rainbow steps past the golden Lord Murugan statue into a limestone temple cave. Go early, before the heat and the crowds.
Petronas Twin Towers skybridge: Cross the bridge between the towers, then take the lift up for the view over the whole city.
Jalan Alor night market: Plastic stools, charcoal grills and satay skewers until well past midnight.
Kuala Selangor fireflies: An hour outside the city, a night boat ride along a mangrove river lit up by thousands of synchronised fireflies.
