Paris in September means the metro gets stuffier and the terraces start clearing out. Madeira, meanwhile, is still sitting at 25°C with the Atlantic doing its thing. A non-stop Ryanair return will get you there for €63.

💰 How far does your money go?

A three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant runs about €50, roughly what you'd pay for two mains alone in central Paris. A domestic Coral beer costs around €2.50, less than half a demi at most Parisian terraces. A basic lunch menu with a drink and dessert can still be found for under €10 outside the tourist strip.

☀️ The Weather

Funchal holds onto summer far longer than most of Europe. September highs sit around 26°C, October settles at 23°C, and by November you're still looking at 21°C by day with mild nights around 15°C. Plenty warm enough for the coastal promenade and a swim in the Atlantic while Paris reaches for a coat.

🏨 Where to Stay

Three ways to base yourself in Funchal.

Vila Ramos Hotel — 8.0/10 · From €70/night Simple, central and a short walk from the old town, for travellers who'd rather spend on levada walks than the room.

Castanheiro Boutique Hotel — 8.6/10 · From €140/night A rooftop pool with sea views, right in the heart of Funchal's historic centre.

Reid's Palace — 9.2/10 · From €350/night Madeira's most famous clifftop hotel, for the trip where budget stops being the point.

🎯 What to Do

Funchal runs on cliffs, gardens and Madeira wine.

Cabo Girão Skywalk — A glass platform 580 metres above the ocean, one of Europe's highest sea cliffs and the "only here" moment of the trip.

Monte Palace Tropical Gardens — Koi ponds, Japanese pagodas and the famous wicker toboggan ride back down into town.

Old Town and Mercado dos Lavradores — Painted doors on Rua de Santa Maria, then fresh fish and flowers at the market.

Levada walk — Madeira's old irrigation channels turned into some of Europe's best coastal and forest hiking trails.

🗺️ Where to Go From Here

Madeira is also a base for exploring the wider archipelago.

Porto Santo — A 9km golden sand beach, reachable by a 15-minute flight or a 2h15 ferry from Funchal.

Desertas Islands — A boat trip out to see monk seals and dolphins in one of Portugal's least-visited nature reserves.

Ponta de São Lourenço — Madeira's driest, most dramatic coastline, a clifftop hike about an hour east of Funchal.

At €63 non-stop, this is one of the cheapest ways out of a Paris autumn. Dates like these don't sit around long.
