Malaysia is the kind of destination most Europeans keep meaning to visit. Hot, cheap and chaotic in the best way, with food markets that stay open until 3am. Saudia is flying Madrid and Barcelona to Kuala Lumpur from €469 return, with one stop and dates spread across spring and early summer.

💰 How far does your money go?
Kuala Lumpur will recalibrate what you think cheap means. A nasi lemak, Malaysia's national breakfast of coconut rice, sambal and fried anchovies, costs around RM 4 at a hawker stall: under €1. A full lunch at a local food court runs RM 12 to 15, roughly €2.50, less than a tostada con tomate in most Spanish bars. The city is built for eating on a budget, and doing it very well.
☀️ The weather
Kuala Lumpur is warm year-round. In February and March, temperatures sit between 27°C and 33°C with relatively dry, sunny mornings. From April onwards, afternoon showers become more frequent, but they are usually short and sharp, clearing quickly. June is hotter and more humid, around 28°C to 34°C, with lush surroundings as a result. Do outdoor sights in the morning and take shelter with an iced coffee during the afternoon heat.
🏨 Where to stay
KL has options at every budget, mostly concentrated around Bukit Bintang and the KLCC park.
Tune Hotel Kuala Lumpur City Centre — 8.0/10 · From €40/night
No-frills but central and consistently clean. Pay only for what you need and spend the savings on street food.
Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral — 8.6/10 · From €85/night
Modern rooms steps from KL Sentral, the city's main transport hub. Easy airport access and a rooftop pool make this a smart mid-range base.
Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur — 9.0/10 · From €210/night
Adjacent to the Petronas Towers with park and skyline views from the upper floors. The gold standard for a KL luxury stay.
🎯 What to do
KL rewards curiosity. The best things here are not in tour brochures.
Batu Caves — 272 rainbow-painted steps lead to a network of ancient Hindu cave temples, just 30 minutes north of the city centre. Free entry and unforgettable.
Petronas Twin Towers Skybridge — Free timed entry puts you 170m above the city, with views across the skyline that most visitors miss by heading straight to the paid observation deck.
Jalan Alor Night Market — KL's most famous outdoor food street after dark. Satay, grilled seafood, cold Tiger beer and the kind of organised chaos that makes Southeast Asia so hard to leave.
Merdeka 118 observation deck — The second-tallest building in the world, with a brand-new observation deck on floors 115 and 116. Views that stretch to the coast on a clear day.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Kuala Lumpur is best treated as a starting point, not a destination in itself. The rest of Malaysia is worth your time.
Penang — 1-hour flight or 4.5-hour train. George Town is a UNESCO-listed city of Peranakan shophouses, colonial architecture and street food that rivals any city in Asia.
Langkawi — 1-hour flight. Ninety-nine duty-free islands off the northwest coast. White sand, clear water and cheaper alcohol than anywhere on the Malaysian mainland.
Melaka — 1.5-hour bus. A UNESCO Heritage city with Portuguese forts, Dutch townhouses and Chinese temples all within walking distance. Best visited overnight.
Cameron Highlands — 3-hour bus ride into the hills. Tea plantations at 1,500m, cool air after the city heat, and strawberry farms. A genuinely unexpected side of Malaysia.
Bali — 2.5-hour flight. Easy to add on at the end of a Malaysia trip, and one of the most compelling destinations in Southeast Asia.
Dates run from February through June 2026, and there is plenty of choice across spring. Check availability before prices move.
