New York moves fast. Here is where to spend your time.
Central Park - 843 acres in the middle of Manhattan. Walk, cycle, or just sit and watch the city go by. The Reservoir loop at sunrise is worth an early alarm.
Metropolitan Museum of Art - One of the largest art collections on the planet, spread across 17 acres of the Upper East Side. Budget at least half a day. Entry costs around $30 for international visitors.
Chelsea Market - A former biscuit factory turned food hall with 35+ vendors under one roof. Perfect for a cheap, excellent lunch before heading up to the High Line next door.
Staten Island Ferry - Free. A 25-minute crossing with straight-on views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. Most tourists pay $20+ for tourist boats. This costs nothing.

New York is a gateway to the best of the East Coast.
Philadelphia - 1.5 hours south by Amtrak. Home of the Liberty Bell, excellent museums, and the original cheesesteak.
The Hamptons - 2 hours east by train. Long Island’s beaches at their best in September and early October, before the season ends.
Boston - 4 hours north by Amtrak. History, excellent food, and lobster rolls worth making the trip for.
Washington D.C. - 3.5 hours south by Amtrak. Most Smithsonian museums and national monuments are free. A genuinely impressive city to walk.
Niagara Falls - 7 hours by train or 1 hour by domestic flight. One of those places that has to be seen to be fully understood.
