💰 How far does your money go?
Dublin has the most expensive alcohol in the EU. In San Juan, a cocktail at a local beach bar costs around $8. A full plate of rice, beans, and grilled chicken from a local spot is $10. Dinner with drinks at a proper restaurant in Old San Juan comes to around $25–$30 per head. The arithmetic is blunt.
☀️ The weather
Dublin in September and October averages 14–16°C with frequent rain and grey skies. San Juan sits at 29–30°C through both months. September and October fall within the Atlantic hurricane season, but in practice most days are warm and sunny with brief evening showers. Sea temperature is around 28°C. It's the shoulder season: quieter, cheaper, and still fully summer.
🏨 Where to stay
San Juan has good options across every budget, with Old San Juan and Condado the two best areas to base yourself.
Dreams Miramar — 8.2/10 · From €90/night Clean, well-run hotel in Santurce with a pool and good access to both the beach and Old San Juan. Solid base for budget travellers.
Hotel El Convento — 9.0/10 · From €195/night A 17th-century former convent in the heart of Old San Juan, now a boutique hotel. Rooftop terrace, courtyard bar, and the most atmospheric address in the city.
Condado Vanderbilt Hotel — 9.2/10 · From €370/night Oceanfront landmark on Condado Beach. Grand interiors, direct beach access, and service that justifies the price.
🎯 What to do
Puerto Rico punches well above its size.
El Morro and the old city walls — The 16th-century fortress at the tip of Old San Juan is one of the best-preserved Spanish colonial fortifications in the Americas. Walk the walls at sunset and you understand exactly why this city was worth defending.
Bioluminescent bay kayaking, Laguna Grande — After dark, paddle through water that glows electric blue with every stroke. Caused by microscopic bioluminescent organisms, it is genuinely one of the most unusual natural experiences in the Caribbean.
Casa Bacardi distillery tour, Cataño — A short ferry across the bay from Old San Juan brings you to the world's largest rum distillery, in operation since 1862. The tour ends with a cocktail. There is no bad version of this afternoon.
Salsa at Plaza de Armas — On weekend evenings the main square of Old San Juan fills with dancers. Join a local salsa class beforehand and you will have something to do with your feet.
🗺️ Where to go from here
San Juan is a base, not a dead end. Puerto Rico has a lot more to offer.
Culebra — Small island off the east coast with Flamenco Beach, consistently ranked one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Reachable by ferry from Fajardo, about 90 minutes east of San Juan.
Vieques — Another island off the east coast, with remote beaches and the famous Mosquito Bay bioluminescent bay. Quieter than Culebra and worth the ferry ride.
El Yunque — The only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system, an hour's drive east of San Juan. Waterfalls, rare parrots, and forest trails through dense jungle.
Luquillo — A beach town 45 minutes east with a long arc of palm-backed sand and a row of local food kiosks on the beach road. One of the best cheap lunches in Puerto Rico.
€489 return from Dublin, flying JetBlue through New York. September and October have the widest availability. Fares at this level move fast.
