Vienna is not a cheap city. A beer on a terrace costs €5, a sit-down dinner runs €18 before dessert. Singapore has a reputation for being expensive — but that reputation is built on rooftop bars, not hawker centres. Fly direct with Scoot from €556 return and you may find it cheaper to eat in Singapore than at home.

💰 How far does your money go?

A full plate of chicken rice or laksa at a hawker centre costs around €3. A local kopi coffee: under €1.50. That same money in Vienna barely gets you a third of a beer. Singapore is not the cheapest city in Asia, but for anyone used to paying €18 for a casual dinner out, the hawker centres will feel like a revelation.

☀️ The weather

Vienna in June can be genuinely warm, but it is not guaranteed. By November, expect grey skies and temperatures dropping to 6°C. Singapore sits on the equator. It is 30°C year-round, with brief tropical downpours that last 20 minutes and leave blue skies behind. December in Singapore: 28°C. December in Vienna: 2°C. The contrast does not get much starker than that.

🏨 Where to stay

From city-centre capsules to rooftop infinity pools.

The Pod at Beach Road — 8.4/10 · From €27/night Boutique capsule hotel steps from the Arab Quarter and Haji Lane. Smart design, personal lockers, and a location that punches well above its price.

Naumi Hotel Singapore — 9.1/10 · From €130/night Boutique hotel near Marina Bay with a rooftop infinity pool and rooms that feel genuinely luxurious without the five-star price tag.

Capella Singapore — 9.5/10 · From €480/night Set in colonial grounds on Sentosa Island, voted best hotel in Singapore multiple times. The pool alone justifies the splurge.

🎯 What to do

Singapore rewards three days. Give it four and you still will not see everything.

Gardens by the Bay — Walk among the 50-metre Supertrees and catch the evening light show. The outdoor gardens are free after dark.

Maxwell Food Centre — Chicken rice, char kway teow, and chilli crab all within a few minutes' walk. Budget around €5 per dish and eat properly for under €12.

National Museum: Once Upon a Tide — Singapore's 60th independence year exhibition traces the city's 700-year journey from coastal settlement to global hub. On until October 2026.

Sentosa Island — Beach, Universal Studios, and a cable car over the harbour. There is nothing else in the region quite like it.

🗺️ Where to go from here

Singapore is the best-connected hub in Southeast Asia. Most onward flights take under three hours.

Bali, Indonesia — Beaches, rice terraces, and temples. A 3-hour direct flight, and still the benchmark for the region.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — Street food, colonial architecture, and the Petronas Towers. Just 1 hour away and far cheaper than Singapore for daily costs.

Penang, Malaysia — George Town is one of the great food cities of Asia. An hour's flight from Singapore and completely different in pace.

Batam, Indonesia — A short ferry ride from Singapore's harbour. Cheap seafood, spas, and a complete change of pace for a day or two.
