💰 How far does your money go
Sydney has a reputation for being pricey, but a lot of it lines up with London. A schooner in a CBD pub averages about £4.75, less than most London pints. A swim and a sauna at the Bondi Icebergs ocean pool costs around £5.30. From Friday to Sunday, the Opal card caps at roughly £5 a day for unlimited trains, buses and harbour ferries, cheaper than a day on the Tube.
☀️ The weather
November is late spring in Sydney. Daytime highs sit around 24°C, with nights near 17°C. The sea is about 19°C and warms through the month. Expect around 8 hours of sunshine a day, with the odd shower that clears quickly.
🏨 Where to stay
The CBD keeps you close to the ferries at Circular Quay. Central is the cheapest base, with trains to everywhere.
Wake Up! Sydney Central: 8.3/10 · From £35/night A big, social hostel opposite Central Station, ideal if most of your budget is going on the flight.
Little National Hotel Sydney: 9.1/10 · From £135/night Compact, well-designed rooms on Clarence Street, with a rooftop library and lounge a short walk from the harbour.
Capella Sydney: 9.7/10 · From £500/night A restored sandstone heritage building near Circular Quay, one of the highest-rated hotels in the country.
🎯 What to do
Sydney is best explored by water, with a new neighbourhood at the end of every ferry ride.
Taronga Zoo by ferry: A 12-minute crossing from Circular Quay to koalas, kangaroos and a giraffe enclosure with a skyline view.
Cockatoo Island: A UNESCO-listed convict site in the middle of the harbour. You can even camp there overnight.
Newtown's King Street: Sydney's most lively strip for cheap Thai, vintage shops and late bars.
Watsons Bay and The Gap: Ferry out for fish and chips by the water, then walk to the cliffs facing the open Pacific.
🗺️ Where to go from here
You have flown 17,000km, so it's worth seeing more of Australia while you're there.
Jervis Bay: Some of the whitest sand in the world and dolphins in the bay. About three hours south by car.
Newcastle: Surf beaches, ocean baths and a relaxed food scene. Around two and a half hours by train from Central.
