💰 How far does your money go?
Skip the resorts and stay on a local island, and the Maldives stops being the luxury fantasy everyone assumes. A guesthouse room with breakfast runs €45-€80 a night, a full local meal is €5-€8, and a half-day snorkelling trip to swim with nurse sharks and stingrays starts around €25. That's less than a round of beers back in a Munich beer garden, per day, in exchange for some of the clearest water on the planet.
☀️ The Weather
Malé sits right on the equator, so the temperature barely moves: expect 27-31°C whenever you land, with sea temperatures a steady 28°C. From November, the dry season kicks in, bringing calmer seas, less rain and reliably sunny days through to February, the best stretch of the year to be out on the water.
🏨 Where to Stay
All on local islands, a short speedboat ride from Malé, no resort mark-up required.
Kaani Village Hotel — 8.6/10 · From €55/night The benchmark Maafushi guesthouse: pool, AC rooms, reliable wifi, breakfast included.
Biosphere Inn — 8.9/10 · From €70/night Simple, friendly, and steps from the jetty on Dharavandhoo, right by the manta ray cleaning stations.
Kiha Beach — 9.4/10 · From €135/night A boutique local-island stay with a pool and spa, without the resort price tag.
🎯 What to Do
Local island life moves slowly, and that's the point.
Nurse shark and stingray snorkelling — A half-day boat trip out to South Malé Atoll's reefs, swimming distance from nurse sharks and stingrays. Visit Maafushi or Himmafushi — Wander a working local island: cafés, small shops, and none of the resort bubble. Sandbank picnic — A boat drops you on a strip of sand in the middle of the ocean for a few hours. Bring lunch. Sunset dolphin cruise — Pods of spinner dolphins are a near-daily sighting just offshore at dusk.
