Malé is the gateway, not the destination. Most atolls are a short speedboat or seaplane hop away.
Maafushi (South Malé Atoll) — The main budget base, 45 minutes by speedboat from the airport. Ari Atoll — The best odds of a whale shark or manta ray sighting, reachable by speedboat or seaplane. Baa Atoll — A UNESCO biosphere reserve and home to the Hanifaru Bay manta cleaning station, seaplane only. Thulusdhoo — The closest surf breaks to Malé, 40 minutes by speedboat.
