Tokyo is the front door to the whole country, and the trains make short work of it.
Hakone — Hot springs and Mount Fuji views, 85 minutes by train on the Romancecar. Kamakura — Coastal temple town with a 13-metre bronze Buddha from 1252, one hour south. Nikko — Japan's most ornate shrine complex, deep in the mountains, two hours north. Kyoto — Old capital, temples and geisha districts, 2 hours 15 on the shinkansen. Osaka — Street food and neon, an easy add-on before flying home, 2.5 hours west.
