💰 How far does your money go?

Tokyo undercuts Frankfurt on the everyday stuff. A bowl of ramen at a counter shop is €6 to €8. A convenience store bento with an onigiri comes to under €4. A tall Asahi from a Family Mart fridge is €2, less than half what you pay for a Pils in a Frankfurt Kneipe. One Tokyo Metro ride is around €1.10 against the €3.65 for a single U-Bahn trip at home. Budget travellers get by on €50 to €75 a day, temple entries and a teamLab ticket on top. Nobody tips, anywhere.

☀️ The weather

Your dates land in Tokyo's best sightseeing window. Late November is dry and clear, days around 15°C, nights down to 7°C, with the ginkgo and maple leaves at peak colour in the city parks. December cools further: 10°C to 12°C by day, close to 4°C first thing, and it stays bright. Rain is rare in both months. Pack one warm layer for the evenings and you will barely see a cloud.

🏨 Where to stay

Shinjuku for transport and neon, Shibuya for the crowds and the shopping.

Nine Hours Shinjuku-North — 8.3/10 · From €45/night Design capsule pods, spotless shared bathrooms, ten minutes on foot from Shinjuku station.

Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya — 8.9/10 · From €210/night Boutique rooms with skyline views, a short walk from the Shibuya crossing.

The Tokyo Station Hotel — 9.1/10 · From €420/night Inside the red-brick 1914 landmark, under the restored Marunouchi domes.

🎯 What to do

Half of Tokyo's best hours cost nothing. The other half are worth booking.

teamLab Planets — Wade barefoot through knee-deep water and infinite mirrored light in Toyosu. Book two weeks ahead.

Meiji Jingu and Harajuku — A forest shrine and the crepe stalls of Takeshita Street sit a five-minute walk apart.

Tsukiji outer market — Grilled scallops, tamagoyaki skewers and standing sushi from 7am. Bring cash.

Shinjuku Golden Gai — Two hundred bars the size of a box room packed into six alleys. One drink, then move on.

🗺️ Where to go from here

Tokyo is the hub, not the whole trip.

Hakone — Hot springs and Mount Fuji views across the lake, 90 minutes by train from Shinjuku.

Kamakura — A giant bronze Buddha and a surf beach, under an hour on the JR line.

Nikko — Gilded mountain shrines and waterfalls, two hours north by train.

Kawaguchiko — Lake reflections of Mount Fuji, two hours by bus from Shinjuku.

Kyoto — Two thousand temples and the geisha districts, two hours fifteen on the bullet train.

Book the late-November dates while the leaves are still on the trees.
