A full seafood dinner with drinks at a decent restaurant comes to around €12 per person. Eat where locals eat and your daily food budget stays well under €20.
☀️ The weather
June is the start of Zanzibar's dry season. The long rains that run through April and May have cleared, skies open up, and temperatures sit between 26°C and 29°C. Humidity drops noticeably. The Indian Ocean holds around 26°C — warm enough to stay in for hours without thinking about it.
🏨 Where to stay
Stone Town, the north coast, and the east coast each offer a different experience.
Malindi Guest House — 8.1/10 · From €38/night A no-frills guesthouse in the heart of Stone Town. Rooftop terrace, central location, and honest value for the area.
Park Hyatt Zanzibar — 8.8/10 · From €180/night A restored 19th-century coral-stone mansion on the Stone Town seafront. Pool, excellent restaurant, and a genuinely beautiful building.
Baraza Resort & Spa — 9.4/10 · From €320/night All-inclusive beach resort on the east coast with butler service and some of the best guest reviews on the island.
🎯 What to do
Zanzibar rewards time. These four are worth planning around.
Stone Town: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best-preserved Swahili trading city on the East African coast. Narrow alleys, carved wooden doors, and a history that stretches back centuries.
Forodhani Gardens night market: Every evening, vendors line the waterfront with grills. Fresh seafood, Zanzibar pizza, sugarcane juice. Dinner for two for under €5.
Jozani Forest: Zanzibar's only national park and the only place on earth you can see the red colobus monkey in the wild. A short drive from the main coastal strip.
Nungwi Beach: The north coast beach with calm, clear water you can swim in at any tide. The most reliable beach on the island for a proper day in the water.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Zanzibar is a good base for the wider region.
Mnemba Atoll — A protected marine reserve off the northeast coast. Among the best snorkelling and diving in the Indian Ocean. Reachable by boat from the north coast.
Pemba Island — Zanzibar's quieter neighbour to the north. Lush, barely touched by tourism, and with world-class diving. Accessible by small plane or ferry.
Mafia Island — Remote and largely untouched, with whale sharks from October to February and pristine coral reefs year-round. Short domestic flight from Zanzibar.
Dar es Salaam — Tanzania's largest city, an hour by fast ferry. A gateway to Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, and the southern game reserves.
