💰 How far does your money go?
Sal is still one of the most affordable Atlantic island destinations going. A plate of cachupa — the local slow-cooked stew of corn, beans, and fish — costs around £4 at a tasca. Sal is small but keeps you busy.
Pedra de Lume salt crater — Float in a natural lake inside an ancient volcanic crater. The salt concentration is higher than the Dead Sea.
Kiteboarding at Ponta Preta — One of the best kiteboarding spots in Africa. Consistent trade winds make it ideal for beginners and experts alike.
Loggerhead turtle watching — Join a guided night tour at the Reserva Natural da Costa da Fragata to watch endangered turtles nest on the beach. Best from June to October.
Funaná in Santa Maria — Head to a local bar after dark for Cape Verde's traditional music: a mix of African rhythm and Portuguese accordion that you won't hear anywhere else.

Sal is a gateway island. The rest of the archipelago is easy to reach by short domestic flight or ferry.
Boa Vista — Saharan sand dunes running straight into the Atlantic. Even quieter than Sal.
Fogo — An active volcano rising 2,800m from the ocean. Hike to the crater and taste the wine grown inside the caldera.
Santo Antão — Green mountain valleys and hiking trails that feel nothing like the sandy islands. Reached by ferry from São Vicente.
Santiago — Cape Verde's cultural capital. The city of Praia has the best music scene and the most authentic local life.
